Learning, I find most are easy to ID but some give me pause. Can anyone post a real good fake of Rose Mandarin? Peter says fakes are appearing of Chinese Export... but what about Famille Rose....is anyone seeing more appearing in the market, if so please post some examples...............George
This is really just modern, not fake, as no one tried to pass it off as anything other than modern, but it is a good example of the faces that in Peter's paraphrased words, "look like farmers who have been out in the fields too long, with the sunburned looking faces."
Here is an example of a modern, as in nineteen-eighties, Hong Kong one with the stretched mark on the bottom. Peter said it still had a decorative value of 125 to 175. I did some research on that Hong Kong facgtory, the faces look better than the the garden seat from the garden seat from the early nineties, no one passed this vase off as an antique either, I only paid 60.00
I had Peter look at this Rose Famille Canton vase from 1920-1930, value 250 to 350 and Peter said "the use of the soft peach or skin toned ground colors is something that first came into use during the period suggested above. It was a softer tone of the stronger near orange color used earlier (trim circle). While not mandarin, I include to show the softer republic color.
Here is a modern Macau decorated plate
The faces are not as bad as the nineties plate, has a mark on the back and the only reason I know it is Macau, because I saw an example that also had a sticker affixed that said, "decorated in Macau, mine only had a Chinese mark without the sticker, but once again, no one tried to pass it off to me as anything other than modern.
I have a good older one of a square shape cup and saucer that people on the forum liked of Rose Mandarin with good faces, but now I can't find the photo. No suntan on the good ones and no suntan of some modern ones as well. Caution, the Macau decorated plate with the sticker, exactly like mine with the same Chinese Mark, was being sold for hundreds of 200 dollars, even with the sticker saying decorated in Macau. I think I paid 5.00 for mine. Speaking of mines, it is a real mine field out there. I traded one of my old dolls for the good the good cup and saucer. Best, Sharon
Sharon is right, Rose Mandarin is not really faked, probably because the 19th century originals are so inexpensive and still on the market in great number. One could call the later 20th century stuff a low quality revial for decorative purposes only.

@steve post 30-08-2023 is a very fine post on famille rose mandarin, in which you shared a chart showing what the faces looked like on early pieces at different time periods through 1900. Plus it has some fine examples including Charlotte's collection and others. Steve's example 1830.
I did remember it was there, but it took time to find it, very educational.
Hmm. I wonder where that is. I'll look for it.
In the meantime, here is Peter's video from years ago about identifying the three types with nice examples. I think he goes into the later rose medallion examples of decline.
Thanks Steve. I saw your image on Youtube some time ago but failed to keep a copy so your presentation is appreciated. In a Youtube video from Bidamount, Peter commented the modern artists just put dots of gold on the hair of the ladies, not artfully hair decoration.
George
@steve Here is the handy face chart that Birgit posted in response to your cup and saucer question on August 30, 2023
That post also featured Charlotte's collection in response.
Okay George, you've been schooled and woodshedded. An excellent question, thanks.

@steve it is page 57 of your past posts, which caught fire and has the flame symbol next to your last reply which comes up as Charlotte, that's a lovely display! The post went for three pages and you have to go back 2 pages to get to your cup and saucer beginning. Some excellent responses from Jeremy and Charlotte, some fine information.
Sincerely,
The #1 Ladies Detective Agency (it is March Mystery Month and that is a fine read by Alexander McCall Smith) 😀
George, page 32 of my Activity at the top of the page titled Angry Bird Flys in for Christmas, contains good photos of a bird vase dated 1870s posted by our member Martin, dated by Birgit and mentions the Tommy Eklof book on Dating Chinese Porcelain by Faces. This has been fun for me, if no one else.
