Anyone familiar with this mark? This 17.5 “ charger has a repair....not the best, with some discoloration. But still quite a beauty for my taste. The enamels are heaped on thickly. And the butterflies and minogames are painted over the other decorations, which is unusual. Has a hex pattern also, which coincidentally is similar to an item I posted recently....but also quite different. Thanks, Todd

@Watership,

Hi Todd,

Your charger is beautiful and very unusual with the honeycomb effect. I like it very much. It's definitely Meiji in my opinion.

I have never seen this mark before so I reached out to a friend of mine Martin Michels website.

He replied that he also has never seen this one before. He thinks the mark is 'KYO' and in a very stylistic way could be 'KYO-YAKI.

He also thought that it was Meiji period and a most beautiful example.

Hope this helps you.

Mark

Hi Mark,

That is more than helpful. Thanks so much, my friend, you are the best! A Kyoto ware charger, am not sure I have one of those. I did think it was unusual. The enamels are extremely thick and of course the coloring also. Thank your friend for me, if you get the chance. 🙂

@watership

Hi Todd -

As with Mark, a very beautiful, and most unusual, decorated piece ...

The overall composition/drawing style almost produces a ‘three-dimensional’ illusion/effect ...

Thanks Stuart!

Came across this on ebay. Very likely the same kiln. The same scalloped edge, alternating design on the back, and most strikingly the honeycomb. The mark has similarities. Just posting in case someone knows the mark.

Hello Todd,

Sorry a bit late with a reply not sure how I missed you post. Agree with all above. I like your plate very much it has that floating world Japanese aesthetic I like. The decoration on the back sort of reminds me of Charles Rennie Mackintosh Art Nouveau. I think if you could get it repaired with a delicate gold repair you would have a super item. Can't help with the mark there is just so many of them it makes  you head hurt, I am sure you will find it one day when you are not looking for it.

Michael

Hi Michael,

I had to look up Charles Macintosh, but it was immediately recognizable when I did. I like those old posters too, very stylish. Yes, a delicate gold repair would be preferable for sure. Sometimes when I am looking at prices that tea bowls go for at auctions, it almost seems like the gold repaired items bring a higher price. The Japanese ones, that is. Maybe it adds a little extra wabi sabi. I suppose it is on a case by case basis....
