My grandfather took back these vases in 1923 from Fiume now called Rijeka in Kroatia. Because he was a collector of Japanese Satsuma and lacquerware ,and the characters on the bottom of the vases I thought of japanese origin. I really don't know how old the are, I have a suspicion that they are not really old because it looks like the green has been sprayed on. Is there anyone who could tell me more about these vases?
I would be very grateful,
thanks Ernest
Hi Ernest,
Not sure about these.
I think they are Japanese. Unusual looking but does have that feel about them. Especially the bases. There is a gilt mark of sorts, but I don't know what it is. I do hope someone here recognizes them.
They also look like early 20th century. Perhaps 1920's
Perhaps @short-dong might know.
Mark
I am not sure either. I had a pair of satsuma-type vases that were a similar green but of an art nouveau style and shape. One fell out of the window so I sold the other or gave it away, so I can't check for similarities. I do recall mine had a touch of moriage and a more definitive japanese mark on the base.
I am inclined to think your pair are Japanese and am going to agree with Mark about the date too, early 20th c.
I have just noticed yours do have a similar moriage around the mouth as mine did. That makes me feel more certain.
Julia
@julia Just curious, who were you throwing the vase at when it "fell" out of the window? John
I am a bit shaky on this stuff but if I saw these on a shelf at an antique shop I would say 1950’s art pottery. Not Asian at all.
@ronm I have been looking at that design trying to decide if that is an stylized purple thistle?
I Googled Japanese vase with thistles and one being sold on Etsy with a matte finish is a large urn with moriage and they call it Matte Nishika, but they do not show the base, but it does have that flat finish in a sage green. The decoration is different but the finish is similar.

Hi
I have not experienced a Japanes vase quite like this. It does have a hints of 1920 in the design, which also remind me of east germany meanwhile the base also has the appearence of something that could be at least vintage asian, especially that gold mark on the base, it is so typical of Japan to bear gold in a mark. Also japan does use thistles in their designs.
In saying all that it is likely east european, based on the design and the slightly bulbous neck. Maybe a 2nd generation german finnish russian from st petersburg that liked thistles and designed and prodcued it in russian occupied east germany post war before the wall came down but as you might have already deduced that is borderline between pure fiction and fantasy and a wild guess.
Dave
It’s very possible the design could have been added. The base glaze looks Satsuma.
Thank you all very much for your opinion on these vases. I now am sure they are Japanese. Thanks Ernest
@ronm I am sorry Ronm. They can not be from 1950 , because my grandfather bought them in 1923 in Fiume. I here by send you foto's of the house of my grandparents , before they sold the house in 1951, Look at the calendar in one of the foto's , in the other foto you can see some of the satsumaware he collected ,and are still in my possession. greetings Ernest
Ernest, I by no means intended to disparage your vases, I was just stating what struck me as late 40’s early 50’s west German modernist art pottery. I could see these vases sitting comfortably on a 50’s teak shelf beside the a predicta Television. Your original post gave a date and I have no reason to question the history of the vases. I am just a trifler compared to most who post here.
@ronm Canadian modesty becomes you but you are not a trifller. I thought of you when I watched a video on William Morris by HENI Talks on YouTube, as you are a Victorian fancier. These pieces would fit nicely in a mid-century setting. I am always amazed at how old pottery can appear so modern, like cong vases and hare fur finish and all the tea dust finish pieces.
Sharon, thank you for the kind words.
I agree, most of what we think of as modernist decoration has it’s roots well back in history, no matter what period or flavour of the month trend.
