Picked this up today at a thrift store. Good looking tight crackle. Signs of age, minor firing flaws, grime, etc. Smooth white foot. Glaze bubbles vary in size. I'm thinking maybe 19th/early 20th C. What do you guys think? John
Great find, John! The shape, color and foot all look plausibly 19th/early 20th C to me.
The pictures are a little foggy. Any chance there's a smudge or something on your phone/camera lens?
Does the glaze stop naturally above the foot, or was it filed down?
@craig My camera lens has a bunch of little scratches, which causes the foggy look. My bad pictures are legend. I'm not sure about the glaze being filed at the foot. I'll look it over. I noticed that the glaze goes right to the foot all the way around, so I guess that could mean it has been filed, but it felt very smooth and natural as well, so I'm not sure. Would the filing cause roughness? If so then is has probably not been filed because it's smooth. I'll look at it more closely and see if I can tell. Let me know if you have any tips for how to tell the difference. Here's an interesting comp. Wish I could see the base of it. I wonder if there's a chance mine is a bit older? https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-an-apple-green-glazed-alms-bowl-china-qing-dynasty-5876499/?from=salesummary&intObjectID=5876499&lid=1
You probably couldn't feel the filing, but you can see it with a loupe at 10-20X. It should be pretty clear if the edge has been ground down. It'll have a flattened surface on the edge, and you'll see the "inside" of the glaze, like below the glossy surface.
But the edge of a glaze that wasn't filed will thin naturally to a stop. There's usually a slight color change where it thins.
IMO the damaged on the footrim is Overglaced meaning Careless workmanship meaning massproduction .
to me its late proc 1980s ...but i still like it great color nice shape.
Hard to say with those blurry photos but it might be old. The glaze looks good and the shape isn't impossible for 18/19th C. Chinese monochromes are always hard to date.
@webboy If it were that recent would it likely have been made in a gas fired kiln and have glaze bubbles that didn't vary so much in size? Unless I am mistaken in what others have said about that aspect in other threads, the varying sized bubbles means wood fired. So since this was fired in wood, seems like it would either have to be very new now that they are sometimes using wood kilns again, or more likely much older I think, given the signs of age it has.
@craig I wish I had something to compare it to that I knew had for sure been filed down, so I'm still a bit unsure. But the glaze seems to naturally thin very slightly and end exactly at the base. No matter how long I stare through my loupe, I can't see anything that looks like it was filed, but maybe I just still don't understand what I'm looking for.
South China late Qing early 20th century.
