Hello All,
I have had this pot for some years. I have always assumed it is a wine pot, as it's construction is not really suitable for hot liquids. Would like to know if my assumption is correct. Also would appreciate any pointers as to it's possible age It is quite large at 15cm high and 14.5cm wide across the top. Not sure why the spout has a removable cover unless it is a cup.
Look forward to your thoughts
Michael.
How interesting, I thought the spout lid was a smaller version of the main lid. I was marvelling that it hadn't got lost when I realised that odd shape next to the pot was a cover for the whole spout. How unusual!
Could it be to keep heat in, or stop poison getting in? May be that is a bit fanciful, but I have had a dallah with a deliberately rattling lid to prevent someone opening it and slipping something unpleasant inside.
I don't recall seeing a pot like this without any handle on the lid, either. It is more like the lid on some cups, but would the spout cover keep liquid in, if it were tilted?
As to your actual question, I have no idea, sorry.
Dear Michael
I do own some lacquerware from Japan, but I never saw a pot like yours although I do see wooden tea pots rather often. Yours seems to have Maki-e type decoration on it, the older/higher end pieces use a finely grinded precious metals as paint so you could try to check with strong magnifying device. In the photo is one of the wooden bowls that I recenly bought. Hope someone more experienced would comment.
Best regards
Spartakos
Dear Julia,
The spout cover is quit lose it would not keep anything in and would fall off if the pot was tilted. As I said in my post think it I think it is for cool liquids. I don't think it's construction would allow for hot water but I suppose if it was just warm water it might work as a tea pot the hole inside is very large and square. It is about an inch by and inch so any tea leaves would easily escape.
I quite like your Idea about the poison a little fanciful yes but not totally out of the question. I have often though it maybe for ceremonially use in a temple but have never been able to establish that. Thanks for your reply.
Dear Sparkakos,
You are right my pot is not what you would call first quality I have a small box that is decorated in gold and silver with birds and like your plate it has depth to the decoration. My pot's decoration although quite nice is flat and in one color. The decoration is however gold leaf and quit attractive in my view. Was mainly trying to establish it's purpose and age. Thanks for your reply.
Michael
Hi Michael -
Very interesting piece, and like you, I find the overall design rather simply but attractive. As to age, possibly 19th/early 20th century - but I'am probably way of .....!! ?
Stuart
Dear Brigit,
That's very clever ! You could well be correct. Thanks for your reply.
Dear Stuart,
Thanks. Yes doubt it would be older than 19thc.
Michael
This is similar, says it is for hot water. I came across it when looking to see if it were a ceremonial sake pot - the cover then being to stop evaporation.

Dear Julia,
Thank you seems I was wrong about hot water. Perhaps in Japan they don't have their water quite so boiling hot as we do in the west.
The example you found is really beautifully decorated from the 17thc as with a lot of things later productions are not quite so wonderful but I am happy to have mine in my collection of things I can now label it Japanese hot water pot possibly 19thc.
Thanks for all the comments.
Michael
