Hey everyone I got these pieces in a lot and I am pretty sure the bowl is lacquered but unsure of any age and if it is Chinese? The other 2 seem like wood but are very light and highly detailed with no makers mark or anything so I am wondering if they are even old or are Japanese okimomo? Any help would be great! Thanks!
Hi Ksocha,
Very tricky to answer your questions. First of all it is virtually impossible to identify timber from photo's unless you have a clear view of the grain. You say the items are very light but from the photo's they seem fairly small, so the weight may be appropriate for their size. The lighter coloured standing figure seems to be box wood. As I can't see any of the timber on the recumbent Buddhist figure I can't hazard a guess. As to age both the carved figures are quite nicely with good facial expression, the faces of the boys climbing over the Buddha are all different. That could indicate they have a little age. The lacquered bowl is nicely done with a domestic scene , precious objects and Buddhist objects again could point to an older rather than a very recent date. As to place of origin others here may be able to give you better advise than I can. However the inclusion of the hanging theater masks and some of the other objects plus the overall image in the bowl make me think It hails from Japan. The wooden figures are more difficult for me to guess, perhaps the woven cane basket on the Buddha indicates Japan. The term Okimono could be applied to these small Items. My worry is that none of the objects seem to have any natural wear or signs of being handled, especially to the bases where you would expect to signs of use. So I have concluded that the probably date to the second half of the 20thc. I think they are examples of the better quality tourist type of object brought home by a traveler and kept safe in a cabinet and thus are in such good condition. I may of course be completely wrong and stand to be corrected.
Cheers
Michael
Hi koscha,
I agree with Brettm post and comments therein.
In my opinion your box wood figure is Chinese and dates to the 19/20th century. Very nice detail to the characters face.
The reclining laughingly buddha is also chinese imo but a product of the 20th century. I am not sure what the wood is. It resembles Rosewood. But i can't see the grain etc. It maybe dyed. The basket referred to appears to be chinese rather than possibly japanese.
The dish is a nice example of glit work from possibly the late Meiji period 1868-1912 or early taisho period 1912-1926.
A few nice finds.
