I own a very old bronze bowl from my ancestor, great-great-great-uncle. Probably from china or japan?
It has a weight of 2061 g. A diameter of 25 cm and a height of 12.2 cm.

I am interested in whether she is from japan or china and how old she can be + -.
As I once heard from the 17th-19th centuries .
It would be very nice if you could help me identify the bowl.

As I remember, this bronze bowl was taken from a trip as early as 1900.

@tessi

The bowl has a somewhat crude “Ming Xuande” Mark. It however in my opinion is more likely from the late 19th or early 20th based on style and patina. Let’s see what others have to say.

Hello and thank you for your opinion. I only learned that this bowl is at least from 1800 or rather a bit older. Naturally grown patina. I hope I learn more about it. The sound of the bowl is as good as a bell. It sounds like a long time. What exactly were these bowls used for? Greetings and stay healthy.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum!  To me the figure on the bowl looks Japanese and it does seem more 20th c but if your bowl has been in your family that long, that can't be the case.

I am swayed in my opinion because I have a couple of plates with a similar mark quite crude as George says, looks to be surrounded by dragons or some such.  I assumed mine are Chinese 20 th c brass items pretending to be Ming but they could be Japanese, I suppose.  I haven't really given them much thought.  I will try to find them.

Hi

I have just received a message that my bowl is at least from the 18th century ... so 1700-1800.

Please only give information about my bowl. Not what someone else has. Thanks to all.
My bowl is from 1700 to around 1800.
That has been confirmed to me.

@tessi  Who is the expert that you consulted with who gave you that date? And did they handle the piece or was their assessment based on the pictures you have shown us here?

Well if you already know what you have and just need confirmation but don’t want to know about other people’s comparable items maybe you shouldn’t ask here. Because that’s the way we work: by comparing with pieces we own we try to help others who have similar ones.

@tessi  Whether or not the expert is Chinese has nothing to do with the person's knowledge in Asian art. Be specific. Who is the expert and which auction house are they with?

I apologise if my earlier comment was not specific enough.

My opinion about your bowl is that it is most likely a product of the 20th c with a small chance of late 19th. How that squares with it having been in your family, for so many years, I don't know.  I have see something similar described as rare and genuine which appears to have sold for a few hundred pounds but if that is so, I feel sorry for whoever purchased it as there are plenty of items in this style, with this mark selling for a lot less and the concensus seems to be that the mark is for decoration only.

I know you don't want reference to other people's items, but I like to back up my opinion when I can so here is a link to an honest appraisal of similar items. If the seller got that much she did well; single plates often go for a great deal less as a quick search will show you.
