This is a rather unique piece of cloisonne to me. It is decorated all throughout the design area (not the ground) with five petal flowers impressed into it. I am not sure how this effect was created. My best guess is that the design might have been cut out of a sheet of embossed metal which had that design already, then it was inlaid within the cloisonne, and then painted over. But I'm just guessing so I am hoping one of you has seen this style and can educate me. At any rate, I find it to be quite attractive. The design is beautifully elegant and I was definitely an instant fan upon seeing it. Sadly, it does have one minor area of damage, a little ding and resulting halo, so it isn't quite perfect. John

It’s foil Ginbari. Is it marked? Can we see the base and top please.
@lotusblack The only foil pieces I have seen make it appear as though the foil is more deeply buried so it has a 3D look. On this vase it is right at the surface which I have not seen on other pieces. Also, usually the foil is either in the ground area only, or it is underneath everything. This is the only one I have seen where the foil is only in the design. Also, the foil on this one is perfectly encased inside of the cloisonne wire. So, those are the aspects I can't find other examples of. I will show the top and bottom later, but first I would like to hear what people have to say about these other aspects and if there are other examples with these qualities.
Here's one that has the same aspects I mentioned above, although it is a much lower quality.
Another one with some similarities, although again not as fine, and the embossed foil extends throughout the whole piece.
Your vase is made partially in the Ginbari technique with the combination of translucent and opaque enamels. This type appears less often than pieces with ginbari oll over.
Your vase has a opaque background and ginbari is used to highlight the flowers. A comparable piece was sold at gallerie Zacke a few weeks ago.

There are other examples with ginbari backgrounds and highlights in opaque enamel as well.
The reason, why there is not as much depth in the translucent enamel on your vase is that the enamel coating is less thick than on most examples.
You have a high quality and very nice looking vase imo.

@johnshoe High quality Japanese cloisonné is picking up steam. I was offered $500 for my dragon vase I had to decline. I think they will appreciate over time nicely. I have an opinion that the America’s are holding some impressive pieces at good bargains that’s one reason I have started to focus on Cloisonné from Japan.
@lotusblack I agree that cloisonne is a good buy right now, and I also agree that there is a fair amount of it to be found here in the states. FYI I sent pictures of my mini cloisonne spoons that I recently posted to Peter and will let you all know what he has to say once I hear back.
@asiarob Thanks for your insights. Please let me know if you come across an example like mine where the whole flower design is in ginbari and the whole background is not - I have not yet come across one.
@johnshoe It is a lovely piece and most like the first example provided by Robin except more involved with the leaves and stems also being ginbari. I looked at examples of Iris Japanese cloisonne without finding one exactly like your vase. Someone loved it and took good care of it, as it does not look to have damage. Looks like an interesting puzzle. Sharon
