I picked up this artwork recently, it was falling out of the frame it was dropped off in but the artwork managed to survive in a clean state upon purchase and transporting back home. Found it in a GW for $40 on a busy Sunday, it caught my eye from across the floor and the rest of the waiting crowds attention when the cashier made an exclamation about it. Felt awkward, but upon bringing it home and assessing the out of frame condition, which only the brocade has some front facing issues (raised bit on the bottom middle, and the left bottom corner was caught in the frame upon detachment), and the back padding is virtually ruined. It's mounted in a byobi panel style which makes it more unique to me.
I'm planning on fixing up the frame and touchups necessary, but I'm really starting to appreciate its art quality which is above average with comparison. Can anyone help with the translation of the seals and calligraphy?
Can you provide a clearer picture? It looks a bit reflective.
@pbarski93 I should be so lucky and have an ackward moment at our Goodwill. I love the cranes, someone will be along, George and others know about paintings. I would have bought it for the cranes alone and I love script.
@fufu7755 Welcome to the forum, the last shot is a bit reflective but the others enlarge rather well in comparison to many photos we receive, the one of the writing enlarged for me and the surface one. If you tap a photo and then tap outside the frame of the photo, it will allow you to make the photo as large as you want and tap the arrow either side of frame to view them as a slide show. Sharon

I can't positively identify any of the chop marks in relation to Wang Tao's listed artworks but the calligraphy artform style is very reminiscent to some pieces. Some artwork is close, others farther from the style. The age of the paper having its medium yellow tint is closer to the 1960's which might link this back to an earlier artwork to his career in respect to his age given chop marks are evolutionary.
As for Yu Tang, there is little information to compare to. If it is indeed in relation, then this work is only significant to the appreciation of the subject and skill.
@sharonp the cranes are a personal favorite to me as well. The details about them are far more important when compared to the rest of the subject; here skill is notable with the edge work and the overall form of their bodies. Yet the attention to detail of the small bits and softer accents are considerations of deep thought and study, an expression of the artist's soul. I liken the the ruffling outlines of both, the appropriate thickness of the tongue of the primary crane, and the eyes... I always catch myself following these first over the rest of the details. The bonus being the use of negative space as a division of the breast into the belly is where I really find its creativity shine.
The calligraphy is uniquely striking, complementing the work entirely. Complicated yet clear; Sharp with its freedom. While not translated yet, I feel it's statement is written with as much care and thought as the details produced by this particular hand in question.
I've grown to appreciate this one.
