Hello
I have been lucky enough to have been given some wonderful items to sell on a commission basis. A mixture of French and Chinese antiques collected in the late 19th-early 20th century by the grandmother of the now owner. There is a painting of the grandmother with lots of Chinese porcelain in a cabinet in the background - probably some of the items I am now showing you.
any help with valuations and age is really appreciated!
Canton famille rose planter set and a stand 20cm high, 24.5 cm diameter (stand)
my guess - Qing dynasty, mid 19th century, good/very good condition - some chips, no cracks
Porcelain jug, 15,5cm high, repair to handle
not sure on age
large famille rose bowl 26cm diameter, 11cm high, one repair and some hairline cracks
'made in china' to base, would that mean it is a later copy?
Imari? bowl one large repair, 20cm diameter, 8.5cm high not sure on age
Blue and White dragon dish, 20cm diameter, 4.5cm high, good condition with a couple of chips to the rim, mark to base, not sure on age
Im not sure what to call this one!? its in very good condition, height including the lid is approx 19cm with a similar diameter. Im really fascinated by this, would love to know more!
Canton paper fan with box, im guessing 19th century? with ivory handles carved beautifully, it is extremely delicate so has quite a bit of damage to the paper part, 28cm long
ivory card case, with the original box! really good condition but the box is very delicate. 11cm high
Canton mother of pearl something or other! 8.5cm long, very good condition
again im guessing late 19th century?
thank you all who made it to the end, I hope its ok doing one big post, I thought that might be better than spamming the forum. Any help is greatly appreciated
many thanks once again
George
I will have a go at some, in the order you have posted but, I am on a small screen so hopefully others will chime in and correct me where necessary.
Late 19th c
Qianlong, about 1780?
Vintage bowl
Kangxi imari bowl
The lidded pot looks to be what is called a kamcheng, probably also later19th c.
All of the above you can easily check prices online and adjust for damage etc. 😊
Hi George,
1. Rose Famille planter is mid 19th Century. Excellent because it's got its original base stand.
2. Porcelain jug looks Qianlong period 1723-95.
3. Famille verte bowl marked made in China is I believe HK ware or Canton circa 1950's or early 60's.
4. The dragon B&W dish is difficult to date and would really need to be handled. If it is thickly potted and heavy its a 20th Century example. If not it's probably mid 19th Century. I suspect it is later.
5. The lidded container or kamcheng is a funny one. It looks on first appearance to be mid 19th Century. However the blue is too bluish and should be more turquoise-blue. But that could be the camera. Also there isn't any gold gilt in the hair that you would possibly find on other examples. So it could be very late Guangxu or very early Republic period. However, the hand-written mark is consistent with mid 19th Century. So it's either mid 19th Century or early Republic period imo. But I am leaning towards mid 19th Century.
6. The ivory fan is mid to late 19th Century. Excellent because it has its original box. Excellent and very fine carving. Difficult to sell due to the difficulty in exporting any ivory since the ban. But definitely has a increased marked value of late with some excellent results in Australia and Europe. But this would depend on your location
7. The ivory card case is mid to late 19th. Unusual and rare because it has its original box. I have only seen one other with its original box and that is owned by Peter! High quality Cantonese carving.
8. The MOP carving looks like late early 20th Century.
Values would depend on what avenue you choose to sell, ebay, auction, consignment to a retailer or privately.
I hope this helps you. If you reside in Australia I would be interested in the ivory items.
Mark
@imperialfinegems hey thank you so much for all that detail, as for valuation I guess I would like an auction guide price if you could give an idea that would be appreciated 🙂
I have an idea of price for the ivory items - i would estimate something like £600-700 each? unfortunately im in the UK so i dont think i can sell them - a real shame, as you say they are excellent examples and rare!
i saw a similar planter and stand sell at auction for £360 would that be a good ball park figure?
someone suggested £200-£250 for the dragon dish but I thought that seemed a little high
any other suggestions ? I would be very grateful,
thanks so much
George
The planter should have a low start estimate of 200 pounds. It should sell for around 400-600.
The ivory fan is very collectable with fan collectors. It should have a start estimate of around 300. It should sell for around 500-750.
The ivory card case should have a start estimate of around 150. It should sell for around 400-750.
The dragon plate would heavily depend on how the buyers perceive it as either genuine or a fake. If it's a fake then it should sell for only around 30. If it is genuine it should be over 250+.
Just remember that auction house like to put very low estimates in order to generate interest. Too high and clients won't bother.
Pick a well-known auction agent with good history and exposure is absolutely essential in order to get market value.
Mark
@imperialfinegems thanks so much Mark 🙂 shame i dont think i will be able to sell the ivory, which i really dont understand as I am seeing Ivory items still for sale at auction houses
@imperialfinegems would you say the jug and kamcheng items are of low value?
