Hello, I'm trying to evluate the jar on attached pictures. Have lot of doubts.
Base - I think it's ok for period. Very grey, but convincing me, looks like natural dirt/patina, not artificial we can see on fakes all time. Picture is not properly made, but looking on shadows it's little convex. Spiral turning marks are also ok. No idea what Chinese characters and number can mean, for sure made later - collection inventory note?
Looking on sides, lot of questions arised. I've compared it with examples sold in Bonham's, Christie's and Sotheby's:
https://www.sothebys.com/fr/auctions/ecatalogue/2019/important-chinese-art-n10113/lot.881.html
https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/24525/lot/243/?category=list
Doubts:
- why one of horses is in real pegasus? With no doubts I can see wings, what does not exist on other vases. From other side, fake-maker would not change original design...
- second horse is not so dynamic, on other vases they look like full gallop, this one slowly moving. Also yellow paint filling the horse is very flat, without any shading, or maybe it's way picture was made, as the second one (pegasus) looks better,
- plants around rocks differs comparing to other examples,
- colours are little flat in general, but it can be not properly made picture, probably wrong white balance, as the white ground is little yellow, so all colours differs to natural,
- from other side, all glaze has small cracks, not well visible on low resolution pictures, it's sign of age, but maybe possible to fake it, too
Thanks in advance for any comments. Maybe the jar was made later? I've seen some KangXi jars with virtually same base. It can explain differences in painting.
Best regards,
Lysander
Hi Lysander,
transitional ceramics are not my field, but I have a baluster jar (though not with horses) that allowed me a comparison.
I would refrain from buying this one: the surface looks too shiny and there are no glaze faults present. The horse looks a bit strange. The bottom looks ok but I think they overdid it by adding a pseudo inventory number and a mark. Let’s wait for the experts‘ opinion.
Birgit
Hi Lysander,
I have no idea about these things. But my amateur two sense is that your doubts all seem like spot-on observations. I’ve learned a lot just by reading your evaluation, thank you. The horse, especially, just seems not nearly as artistic as the ones depicted in the verified pieces.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt

Hi Birgit,
thank you for the very fast answer. I enclose better resolution picture with visible reflexes of light on glaze, some imperfections and internal part with cracks on glaze. Maybe it will help.
Best regards,
Lysander
@watership Hi Todd, thanks for answer, I'm happy I could help. Let's wait what experts gonna write. Best regards, Lysander
Hi Lysander, I’m really not sure about this jar. Found a picture of mine for comparison. As you can see the jar was made in two halves clearly visible from the inside. And it’s surprisingly heavy and sturdy.
Birgit
Hi Lysander -
Your doubts are correct - this jar is a recent/modern copy of a known mid 17th C type - IMO ...
Compare and note the differences in the painting style, overall composition execution, enamel colours and profiles of this jar and the auction house examples cited - this jar is wrong in every aspect ... Leave well alone ...
Stuart
Good evening Stuart,
thanks a lot. Profiles is what I completely left, need to study this aspect.
Best regards,
Lysander
Another possible clue (I say possible as others may know different) is the use of underglaze blue separating the decoration on the top shoulders and neck on polychrome pieces.
Perhaps we can all check Bonhams,Christie’s,Sotheby’s and Museum examples to see if this clue holds water ?
Vic
