Hi
I believe i have a genuine Huang Zhou ink on paper painting circa 1970. I've listed it at auction on eBay but there is no interest. I know there are tons of fakes around but have reason to believe this is an authentic original (albeit in poor condition). Would appreciate any knowledgable comments on this.
Thanks
Martina
My first question is why would you sell this on Ebay? If it is authentic, a major auction house would certainly be a better venue as they could help to give credibility to its authenticity, etc. Also, can you share your reason(s) for believing that it is real and not fake, speak to where you got it from, how long you've had it, if any experts have already seen it in person, etc? Thanks! John
Why is it in such bad condition? I’m always worried when I see zero foxing
Hi thanks much for your comments. I am selling it on ebay because i am very new to the art world and do not have experience. I did try other avenues first and sent an email three or four weeks ago to Christie's showing them this but received no reply. I also sent an email to a local Chinese art expert and although he did not dispute its authenticity he replied that the poor condition and lack of provenance would be a killer. Thirdly i have an artist friend who is Chinese and in his opinion the signature is the same as the real Huang Zhou.
I purchased it very recently for a low price at a local auction in Vancouver Canada. The lot was listed simply as "Ink on paper - donkey" so there was no recognition of who the artist might be. It is in poor condition in that it has been sloppily glued onto some kind of foamy board into an open wooden box and it has some small tears near the top left corner.

@artsie I would recommend that you wait until you hear back from Christies. I assume you used their official submissions system, and if so then you should receive a notification back. It is not uncommon for that process to take awhile for paintings especially. I sent one to Sothebys once that took them a month and a half to respond to. The local dealer brought up some of the tricky aspects of how this works, I think especially with more recent works, because they can more easily be faked. I am not an expert but I did look at some other examples of this artist. At a glance yours seems more stiffly painted. The colors also seem less bold from the other examples I could view online. Perhaps some of this is due to the photography, so it is hard to tell. You can send pictures to Peter Combs through this website and he will help you if he can. I send him things all the time. It's very inexpensive and I have found it to be quite educational. John
Hi John
Thanks much. I didn't know about this service and i'll do that now and send better pics. I agree with you that the colors seem less bold and this and the style from what i've seen is more akin to Huang Zhou's earlier work (1960's or early 70's) rather than the later work from the 1980's that more often shows up at auction. Thanks again!
@artsie a lot of information can be found from past Sotheby’s Christie’s and other creditable sites. I have compared yours with other verifiable examples and belief is yours is not an authentic painting it’s very stiff the eyes on yours look much different and the whole painting is much more faded. But as mentioned I would not sell on eBay until you know for sure.
Hi thanks for your comment. It's probably too late to remove it from eBay but my base price is quite high at about 1,000 USD and i have no bids and 8 more days to go so i guess i can always pull it or buy it back if some info comes to light.
I don't really see what you mean by the drawing being more stiff than the auctioned authenticated sales on Christie's but i am not trained in art. I've attached some pics of Christie's past auctions that look most like this drawing. Thanks again for looking at this
@artsie Here is a side by side. Look at the eye structures and look at the rendering. You ca see the contrast yours is much more still and stiff the example bond refined no lines filling in the shaded areas. The wash on yours is minimal on the example it flows.
Okay thanks 🙂
I do see the difference but my impression is that this was created 5 or 10 years before these other works, that it is one of his earlier works and that artist styles evolve over time. Likely wishful thinking though, thanks
@artsie it takes time to start to see the differences being alluded to regarding stiffness versus flowing etc. It can be very subtle and confusing in the beginning. As for yours being an earlier work you would need to show other authenticated examples that display traits like yours to begin making that case. So far I am not seeing any authentic examples that would do that.
to stir the pot a little, here is an article related specifically to canada, and which starts with huang fakes. one simple test is to determine the media - ie, is this art hand wrought, or is it from a mechanical process such as photo offset lithography - the kiss of death to most art?
Counterfeit Chinese art on display across Canada: experts | CTV News
Hi Martina,
I have no opinion on the authenticity, as my knowledge does not allow for it.
Agree with Johnshoe, it takes time to see the differences in quality of artwork. It is like any other skill, and takes many hours practice. Thousands of hours to become very proficient.
Bonham's has a very good service. They have an inquiry form to fill out on-line and they reply rather quickly. If they have interest they will help you with identification, etc.. If they do not, however, they will just politely decline, which is what you would expect. It is worth a try.
Best, Todd
