I have always been amazed by this piece of art. But never knew who did it or who was the portrait. But the silk threading is pretty amazing.
I can't read Japanese, but the quality suggests the Nishimura family made this. I've had a few over the years, and while their work with animals and landscapes are best known, I did have a fantastic example of European musicians playing classical instruments, so a portrait is certainly not out of the scope of their work.

@greeno107 thanks for the information. I have seen few needleworks in the lion and dog forms. I was really surprised at the prices for these works. I’m not even sure if they did this all by hand or machine because it seems like one piece could take months.
@lotusblack These pieces were done entirely by hand, and the method has been lost. I've read that Nishimura had a method of splitting individual silk fibers to create the reflective manner that creates the amazing depth. Many good Japanese embroiderers copied their styles, but they never were able to capture the same quality of color and depth, because they couldn't copy the fineness of the thread work.
I once had a scene of a waterfall...honest to God, when you shifted the angle of the light, the water looked as though it was actually cascading over the rocks with mist coming off.
Subtle colors due to sun bleaching is not unusual, but it doesn't seem to affect the price too badly if the threads are intact, but if you get one that has been kept in the dark, and hasn't faded in color...you've struck gold!
If anyone could read the mark I would appreciate this. I’m hoping the mark is the name of the portrait as I feel I have seen this person before in a photo.

@jbeer2121 you nailed it that’s the same mark and marker. Now the mystery has been solved. I figure they are making copies here is one I just found on eBay with this studio mark they even fake embroidery lol.
Yours as well as the one I found are far superior in quality to the few other examples I have come across looking into it, although they bear the Uchida mark. I suppose there was probably a range of quality from different artisans at the factory, or perhaps there were different price points.

I do not know where you did read about that story of splitting a single thread of silk, but for sure it is not true, at least for what I know.
In order to be used, the silk threads are made by joining about 10 single threads. What we consider as being a single thread is actually made by more single threads, joined together by the sericine. A single thread is not workable because it will break, being extremely thin and fragile. And almost invisible at naked eye.
