Dear forum members
There been lots of Fukagawa topics lately, but this one is a little different, it has an unusual for Fukagawa hand painted style, it has Fukagawa mark on the base and an artist mark on the side. A cooperation with some artist?
Also second vase that looked nice but has a chip on the top. Any idea what is that mark, it's unusual with the textured base.
Both later 20C?
Thank you.
There is a similar Fukagawa vase on eBay vaguely dated post 1940:
Julia this is a match! Would be cool to have it for a pair. The shape of it with it's odd handles copies some bronze vases I had, and the painting reminds me of Chinese style, very delicate and translucent.
After more search I found some more similar Fukagawa items, they don't seem to be very popular for some reason.
Thank you very much.
Spartakos
You're welcome! It is a very nice vase; the painting is good, the handles look nicely done and a pair would be lovely. Being a pair may enhance the value of the individual items, too.
The second vase is by famous Makuzu Kozan.
Hi Mat,
Interesting. Do you think the first one is a copy? Or do you mean the second of the two vases in the first post?
Julia
Hi Julia, I meant the second vase in the original post, that one with the two birds and the chip.
Wow I was not expecting this vase to be by such a big name potter, doing more research on it, the signature is very similar as to the painting it's hard to tell, Makuzu Kozan use so many different styles in his work. Closest I found is this vase.
I think the best thing would be to have Peter look at it.
Thank you Mat
Makuzu Kōzan IV 1884-1959 looks to be the maker of this vase. the details of his painting look very similar and the signature looks right. Here is other of his vases in the same style.
Wow 🙂 Cool surprise.
I did not want to say because i am not sure but the backmark on the first vase, with the river tail being open is more common in a 1950/60 backmark. However i did not say because i really have no idea and i am just at the gleaning knowledge stage. You can see the example here on this blog. I was very unsure about the second one 🙂 It was pretty but was so different, am delighted it has such a prestigious history and artist.

Indeed, I almost walked past it, it did not make an impression on me in the poorly lit shop and the fact that it had damage... Eventually I took it with the intention to get it free with the purchase of Fukagawa vase, the owner was ok with that.
Now that blog puts that Fukagawa mark as modern but it just don't seems right, I often see modern pieces with this mark but they are mostly printed and of low quality. Very confusing. Gotheborg suggests this mark was used since early 20C. Never known a company redesigning their logo so often before ?

I agree it is super confusing 🙂 Hence why I was reluctant to hazard a guess. There are subtle differences to each of the backmarks. The modern one's are very square, all i can say is the vase looks perfectly good and with some good art so enjoy it until one day you discover what era it is from.
I have just come across another of the first one we discussed. The seller says it is pre-1920 and painted on an Hirado blank.
Dear Julia
Your resourcefulness amazes me. This clarifies so much, the reason it looks so odd for Fukagawa piece, the age that makes much more sense. I've contacted the owner about the price, now that I know it's antique piece I'd really love to have a pair, hope the price will be reasonable.
Thank you Spartakos.
You are very welcome! ? Let us know what happens.
