Hi,
I bought this box over 5 years ago, it was going to be a gift but then I felt it wasn't suitable for a teenager (!) and it has been shut away ever since.
Today, I thought I would wipe it over and all this black stuff started to come off the inside (you can still see remnants in the pictures). I hope it was paint! Underneath, on top and bottom there is an 8 (I think) in marker pen, but strangely the top which has always been overly heavy, seems to have a layer of something other than metal (top weighs 463 g = 50% more than the bottom). It looks a bit like when the backing comes off a mirror, but it is the wrong way around for it to be a mirrored interior and it is shining blue in parts as well as silvery.
I am guessing the metal is partly brass? Maybe the base is copper? Magnets don't stick to it. I managed to capture the colour of the base well in one photo. There is also a mark. It is sitting on an A4 size sheet of paper.
Any ideas of what that weighty lid is for and what it might be made of, please? As a piece, it looks 20th c and I believe the decoration is all to do with prosperity. If anyone can read the text, thank you.

Thank you both. I wondered if the lid was weighted to make it feel like bronze, but why not the base. It could be bronze. It is annoying having 8 sides as the lid only fits when the sides are lined up a certain way.
That definitely looks to be the story of the child with his coins and a fringe. I will try to use a translator for the text, knowing the background to the decoration may help me get at the meaning.

I can read them, however does not make sense to me. I am thinking Japanese.
Well, I didn't get anywhere either. It made no sense in Chinese or Japanese when I translated it. I am just uploading another photo so that I can search the base mark on google. Sorry, but it won't work straight from the photo file. 😊
That didn't work either. I will leave the post up in case I need it again. I also haven't found anything with a similar weight in the lid.
I think it is a modern inkstone in the lid - or pretending to be an inkstone, and that black stuff wasn't paint but ink. I have seen some old, small ones with something secured into the lid and as they say "with inkstone" I assume that is what the secured bit is.

Do you mean " 端午节“ ？ Now make sense, 香增五福 - fragrance increases five good fortune, 桃符(taofu -two wood boards in front of door) 书赤 red booking- 庆三多- celebrate three more ( Children, fortune, longevity. )

@julia The bottom "文昌阁"，usually in Chinese refer to a place. However I saw a manufacture during later Qing to Republic period used this signature

Yin, when I was trying to translate it I only got things like "red" and "it is the third of the end of the 5 year end of the 5 year end", as you can imagine I was pretty confused. Your translation makes a lot more sense.
It is amazing, I have had it for at least 5 years, knowing nothing about it and now after only a few days after sharing the photos, I know loads. Thank you all. 😊
On the inside of the top, could that be a reverse-painted piece of glass? Looks like glass where the black has been removed. In any case, the black looks unsightly to me--I would remove it and see what is underneath.
