Hi all,
I don’t own this. Anyone know what period this is from, how much might be a fair price for such a thing? Has an old nick on the rim. Looks ancient..
Thanks, Todd

Not Chinese and rather strange in a mixture of crackles and glossy surface. And what's that strange stuff on the bottom? I wouldn't buy it because of discoloring and damages, but that is just my personal preference.
Birgit
Hi Todd,
I think that is rather nice but like Birgit I am a little puzzled by the different characteristics. Have you actually handled it? I was wondering if you could tell what it is made of. It reminds me of antique English stoneware that has crackled and discoloured but the outer rim decoration looks Chinese and the central panel perhaps more reminiscent of Japanese?
I can see the funny stuff on the bottom, any idea what it is? I have seen bases that have been coated before but this looks very haphazard. It is all rather odd: Could it be delft? But is it a tin-glaze and would that crackle like that?
JUlia
A month or so in peroxide would bring that discolouration right out.
Hi Birgit, Julia, Nic,
Its on Ebay, I thought there was a chance it was very valuable, and if someone said “that is a museum piece”, then I was going to run to my computer and scoop it up. ? But being that seems to not be the case, here is the link...
Julia, I assumed it to be porcelain. I have a bowl with a repair, and white paste on the bottom similar to this one. Am just guessing. The crackle is extreme, isn’t it. Maybe you will be able to tell more from the additional pics.

Yes, it could be Delft, although I have never seen it crackled like this. Usually it’s rather white and smooth and the edges of plates are badly damaged because the material is so soft. But the strange mixture of styles seems to speak for Delft or some other European manufacture. Someone might have covered a mark on the back with that ugly white paint.
This is a Delft plate:
Birgit
Just saw your post, Todd. The fact that it’s shipped from Japan rather excludes a European production.
Birgit
The bowl with repair and yellowing to the opposite side. On the bowl, the white paste is applied more carefully, covering the inner foot area.
....and hilariously, the little circles are redrawn inside.

Hi Birgit,
Yes, makes it quite a bit more unlikely at least.
take it with a grain of salt
Birgit, yes, I agree, it doesn't really look like tin-glaze at all. Todd, thanks for the link. I thought it might be a very old Japanese pre-porcelain plate but it sounds like the seller thinks it is foreign, specifically Chinese.
Maybe it is English?
Whatever it is, it seems to be really old. Look at the seller’s picture no. 7. I don’t know about Japan, but in China they didn’t make such heavily distorted items after Ming.
Birgit
Looks Japanese to me , and not necessarily very old , just rustic , damaged and poor quality . Over-valued at $199, imo
