Sothebys Hong Kong have now put there forthcoming October sales online ...
There are two paintings auctions on 11/12th, two one owner collection of Imperial Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong porcelain and Chinese Qilt bronzes on 12th, and there main Important Chinese Art sale on 13th which includes some fabulous Imperial jade's from the De An Tang Collection, and wonderful ceramics and lacquers, several of which have great provenance ...

I like the jade seal #3649. I think @avatar may comment on this one. The estimate is wow.....

@imperialfinegems It looks great but there's not a very robust provenance on that seal so I'm surprised they went that high with it. Hopefully it pays off for them, but that's a lot of pressure to put on it.

I see my name was called in this thread regarding lot #3649 but unfortunately I don't know much about imperial seals. I can see that the seal sold for $3,412,000. Do you know where it was sold for only 90k? Was it an auction?

Sothbeys HK sales closed out earlier this morning and all results are now online ...
Many of the pieces in the Imperial Qing ceramics sale obtained some very high prices, a number of which fetched multi times high estimates ...
In contrast, thete main Important Chinese Art sale was somewhat disappointing, with quite a number of lots unsold and very few lots fetching 'crazy' prices ...
An indication, perhaps, of estimates been somewhat 'to high'?!🤔...

I like the ones like this bowl, that did not reach the low estimate but that were still allowed to sell with much lower reserves. I find it annoying to have this many lots not sell. If they want to put super high estimates on things that is one thing, but to have too high of reserves I think it potentially does harm to the market overall because it creates a poor perception of the art when it doesn't need to be that way. I have often seen people on this forum in doing their research point to previous examples of unsold pieces at major auction houses and cite these as reason to potentially doubt another piece, because a previous similar example didn't sell. "Well, maybe that's why this one didn't sell back in 2014" and then they attach a link to the previous listing, etc, etc. Well, no, it didn't sell for the 3,000,000 reserve back then, but it might have gone for 2,500,000 had the seller allowed a lower reserve, and then nobody would be doubting it's validity or value years down the road because it hadn't sold previously. Let the stuff sell for what it's going to sell for and stop the high reserve nonsense. And the major auction houses need to stop enabling sellers who want high reserves. High estimates - fine, make them as high as you think they should be. But high reserves - no. If you want a high reserve on a big ticket item, then try to sell it privately at the price you want to charge, not at an auction. I mean, does anybody think this many non sales at a major auction does anything good for this market? I have a hard time seeing any upside, so why is it being allowed to continue? John
