My local Auction house has a sale early March that may be of interest. Only had a quick glance looks to be some nice items.

Lot 61 the Republic vase with the devils looks great
Birgit
We have the same taste dear Birgit.
In addition I sort of like the zitan bitong and the Huanghuali plaque stand.
Maybe @Greeno107 can give me his thoughts on the Huanghuali piece lot #85.
Mark
Looks like you have plenty of nice things in Australia, what is tempting you most?
Hi Sharon P,
At the moment it's the Republic period vase posted by Birgit.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Lot 85 is described as a zitan brushpot, but #86 is described as pair of HH chairs.
These photos are not close enough and are too back lit to judge accurately the age , type, or quality of the wood, so beware
I don't see enough of a distinct grain to say .. WOW! What great looking HH chairs! This might be a red flag ..I don't know this auction house.
Sorry. If you can get some clear close ups, I'm happy to offer my thoughts.
Otherwise, looks like a nice lot of items! Good luck!
Hi greeno107,
Thank you my friend. Very much appreciated. If I get the chance I'll go to the viewing etc.
Actually it's the Huanghuali plaque lot #84 and not the chairs that I was seeking your thoughts on. My mistake.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Okay! They posted only one photo... hmmm?!?! I would prefer to have seen at least the back of the screen, but here goes...
The wood is rosewood for sure, but I do not feel it is HH or all that old based on the photos.
The inner panel has a deep pitting to the grain, which might suggest 17/18th c. work, but the actual carving doesn't show comparable ware...not a single chip or restoration. The description says there are repairs...I just dont see them.
I think I see a crack on two spots, but they don't look convincing.
The patina and overall color of the wood looks very uniform, too. Could have been heavily cleaned, but more likely not that old. Heavy cleaning lowers value, so not a good thing to do.
The outer frame...top left corner ... about an inch from the inner corner, there is a linear dent in the wood. See it?
The fascinating thing about HH is that it is super hard...it would take a major hit to create that on HH...less so on rosewood.
So, for these reasons I would bid conservatively, perhaps $300-500 as a decorative piece. If it is HH, it probably salvaged from a bed or tressle table, as a pierced table screen would not serve its function, to protect documents from wind or sun while writing.
I had an 18th c. HH pierced dragon panel that was part of a mirror stand that I sold with Lark Mason that was quite similar in style to this manner of scrolling dragon, but there were small repairs and imperfections .... sold for around $3,000 if I remember correctly.
I went through the lots again. Perhaps 2-5 lots appear genuine, but they are pieces below mark and period quality and the estimate was high (for instance a pair of cracked ice b&w kangxi jars with wood stands and covers... $5,000-7,000?). They look a little on the small size for that kind of money.
I get the general vibe that there's a lot more to loose than gain in this auction.
The 'Republic' vase of demons with the Qianlong mark has an interesting design, but it's not really Qianlong-like in style. I had a pair of miniature vases from Daoguang period that had a demon/levels of hell design a few years back.
Is it possible that it is 19th c.? It just seems outside the taste of Republic porcelains.
I also asked few dealers in Huanghuali who also didn't think it was said material.
Interesting thoughts though on the 'Republic vase'. At first I thought no it's earlier than republican period. However on second viewing I think it's likely republican period. It's very nicely detailed and unusual in my opinion. I could not find a similar piece for the Republic period. The only thing that lept to mind were the works by Wang Qi. Who often depicted demons with loosely clad damsels in provoking stances. Just my thoughts. 💭😊
Thanks again for your insight my friend.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Compare how Zhong Kui and demons are rendered on these Daoguang snuff bottles...
https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-6156877
Republic renderings of Zhong Kui are a bit different I think.
Interesting observation... the description says the mark is blue enamel, not underglaze blue....that is weird...especially to have a 6 character mark in blue enamel rather than the more typical 4 character seal mark.
Maybe the mark is actually underglaze blue.
Hello All,
Had a closer look at the offerings can't say there is anything that really appeals. Think Joels let themselves down with the quality of their photos and it does not help their magnification tool does not seem to work for all photo's. Think some of their descriptions are a bit optimistic. As far as the estimates are concerned if you are in the USA they can be reduced by 25 to 30% and if in Europe by 45 to 50% depending on the prevailing rate of exchange. However think some of the estimates are a bit high lot's 44 and 62 for example. I happen to collect covered boxes so lot 62 is of interest but 10 to 15k seems a bit over the top and I am not convinced from the photo's it is quite right.
Think I will go the the viewing think you can always learn something by looking and handling things we are not exactly blessed with many Asian art sales here in Melbourne so will take the opportunity.
Michael
