Chenghua green-enamelled incised 'dragon' dish
Lot: 108 - 16th May 2019
CONDITION: Hairlines to rim
ESTIMATE: £ 10,000 - £ 15,000
PRICE SOLD: £ 879,062 inc. premium
So is this mark and period? I’d have said the mark was late 19th century!
So much still to learn...
Nic
Hi Lewis and all -
This dish caused a great deal of discussion before the sale.
I saw, handled and talk at length with several other collectors, as well as dealers and academics about this piece before today's sale.
The consensus was this was not a genuine Chenghua mark and period piece, the execution of the designs and 'anhua' decoration, the green enamel, writing of the mark, finishing of the foot rim and 'feel' of the glaze/porcelain were all wrong.
The catalogue entry was cleverly worded, only stating 'Chenghua mark' and that's all - not 'and of the period' or 'but later'.
However several people obviously believed, or had been persuaded into believing, it was 'of the period', due to the 'price achieved'?!? ?

Thanks Stuart! I really had started to think “I’m never going to get the hang of Chinese porcelain” because I couldn’t square the circle where this piece was concerned.
I just put it down to my having limited knowledge. To me, this plate is post-1850. Even if I’m wrong on the date, it’s really encouraging to know there were very knowledgeable people out there that had serious misgivings about it being MaP.

Hi ND -
The exterior incised 'anhua' design of flaming pearls, waves and mountains was very stiff and placed, rather 'sharp' in its execution and had non of the movement/flow seen on genuine pieces. The exterior dragons - not shown in the catalogue - had very thin bodies, and details such as the body/leg scales were very poor incised, the green enamel was badly applied, in several areas spreading well past the incised designs.
I have been very fortunate to handle several authentic Chunghua pieces, and the 'feel' of the porcelain and glazes are truly exceptional. This dish had non of these qualities when held and examined ....
Stuart
Well, correct or not it now has a $879.000 worth of provenance. And the backing of a good auction house. Folks like us will be comparing other similar pieces to this well into the future. And the fakers will be mass producing them very fast, week actually, they probably have been faked for a long time.
Very interesting feedback! - Thanks Stuart for confirming what I had suspected.
Interesting item that sold for a lot of money. Very happy vendor I would have thought!
My understanding of said lots being offered by the major auction houses is that if said is thought/believed to be mark and period then that attribution appears within the main heading or directly below the heading in bold print.
If no such attribution is stated either in the main heading/description or in bold within the description below the main heading then said lot is offered as a 19th century or 20th century item.
Mark
If this is 19th century or later, what is it worth? Has the buyer paid almost £1 million for a plate that is worth a tiny fraction of that amount?
I would be devastated! (not that I am ever likely to have that much money to spend on one piece of porcelain).
But still, one can imagine the horror!
Nic
Hi Nic,
The mind boggles. These buyers have for the most part endless deep pockets.
I seriously doubt anyone at Bonham's thought that this lot would bring this amount. But that's auctions for you. You never know what's going to happen.
I recently purchased a ROC period plaque featuring a winter scene. I bought it after it was passed in for about half the estimate.
The plaque was listed as signed by He Xuren and sold by Sotheby's. After receiving said I really wondered and sought opinions etc. They all said not his work nor his signature, but from said period.
I contacted Sotheby about this and received a reply stating that it was never sold as being by said artist just a signature bearing his name.
That's when I looked at the T&C.
Anyway I do like the plaque, just haven't found a place for it yet!
I have uploaded images for comments.
Mark
Sorry guys about diverting.

I believe that on doubtful Lots the Auctioneers phrase is 'let the market decide'.
It would be interesting to hear or see the verbal preamble as the Lot was brought to auction.
I purchased a Rouleau Vase listed as 19th c and the Auctioneer said prior to offering it 'to me this is a 17th c piece but there you go' and then sold it.
It's true that nowhere do they say that it is Mark and Period.
