Yeah, lot 875 looks really lovely. At least you didn't make the mistake of comming to this forum for authentication. I remember a certain thread regarding a gallbladder vase of mine that was disqualified by the master experts of this fantastic forum because it had a red seal mark and was decorated with flying flowers like yor tray.
Corey, that is a bit harsh. People generously give their time for free and I don't recall anyone claiming to be a master expert, but we have some members who do actually have a lot of knowledge and I respect them greatly. However, no one claims to be right all of the time, and I imagine neither are you, but if you seek an opinion people will offer one guided by what they know from experience, what they can find out and the information provided by you or whoever it may be. It is given in good faith and with good will, so please don't be rude about us.
Did you sell your gall bladder vase for good money? I would be interested to see it again as I genuinely do not remember it but then it has been an awfully long time since you shared anything of yours.
I think I remember seeing this tray before in some context. The casual distribution of the flowers is particularly lovely.
Hi Greeno -
As with others, from the images this looks to be a lovely example ...
I hope it does very well for you ...
Stuart
@avatar Actually, I did ask for the opinions of members of this forum about the tray prior to sending photos to Christie’s, not to mention many other pieces.
I value the feedback, not because anyone person is such an expert that their opinion reigns as fact, but rather the collective opinions of several objective educated observers can be very helpful in understanding what is correct, and what is not, about a piece.
Even acceptance from a major auction house is not 100% guarantee of authenticity as I had a piece withdrawn by Sotheby’s the day before the sale because they had made a mistake, and the piece turned out to be a sophisticated reproduction.
Dont hold a grudge… I’m sure you’ll find many more good pieces… all in good time!
We’re all here to share each other’s successes and to lessen or mistakes.
Did you ask these member privately on publicly on the forum. Did you show the tray here before?
@julia (and all the others) Yes, I guess my comment was a bit harsh so I guess I'll have to apologize.
I didn't sell the gallbladder vase for good money. I haven't contacted any auctions about it. I just keep it for myself so far. But my research of it has actually carried fruit. I have had many breakthrough in my personal research of it and there are strong indications it's the real deal. It's only the very high value which would be in the millions and the sublime rarity that speak against its authenticity as a Qianlong mark and period piece. The discussion about it was in 2018. Now I don't want to post a link to the thread but if you type "gallbladder" in the searchbar it should lead you there. Pictures have been deleted meanwhile however.
Like the Yongzheng charger Greeno sold at Christie's the vase is decorated with a main composition of magnolia, peony, and crabapple, additionally there are lingzhi, camelia(?) and some other unidentified species flying around.
One interesting aspect I learned about is that an artist named Yun Shouping is often named in relation to imperial porcelain of the higest order and there is a painting at the Met named One Hundred Flowers that might have served as inspiration for decoration of this kind. Could also be a similar painting somewhere else.

@avatar I’ve only become fairly active in this forum in the last year, so I’m sorry to have missed seeing your vase. I hope you reconsider posting at least one clear photo. Especially given your comparison to Yun Shouping - I love his work!
Yes, I publicly posted my tray with photos here in this forum.
The floral spay design is a known Qianlong design. Since my tray had a Jiaqing mark, I could not account for the Qianlong design.
I was eventually provided with links to Chinese auction houses by a friend of mine outside the forum showing similar trays had been sold.
I'd prefer not to post any pictures of my vase.
Thanks, but it's not really needed. I've already researched it in depth. I don't even think I have the pictures anymore. But how did you authenticate the Qianlomg falangcai mallet vase you sold at David's. Was it done by the auction?
@avatar The sale was handled by Zohan auction in Beijing.
I had authenticated the vase personally prior to sale - there was not a single aspect of its design, decor, or material that differed from known examples, and the source of the vase had an exemplary collection of 18th & 19th c. Art and antiques…not a single reproduction in the entire estate.
The only concern I had was regarding the damage to the mouth.
