Anyone heard of this sale? It had previously been sold at Christie's. SEK 850,000 sounds incredibly low even though it is restored.

Maybe. But it's still the same one sold at Christie's and if Christie's say it's Chenghua period then it's almost certainly Chenghua period.

The cited provenance for this cup to Christies 1999 is, as old friends who have been in this game a long time would say 'no provenance at all' ...
You really need dated provenance back to the mid 70's, or earlier, preferably back up with written and/or documented evidence before any object before one is 'home and dry', so to speak ...
In regard to Chenghua 'chicken cups, excellent copies are know, through Ming/Qing documented records, to have been produced during the Wanli, Kangxi and Yongzheng periods ...
One really needs to have handled an authentic original and also the later period copies as well as those produced much in the last few decades, some of which are very good, to be able to discern one from another ....

The only problem Stuart is that very few people will probably have the chance to handle an early Qing Chicken Cup and as for a Chenghua example, most likely never.
As you aware, I have some Ming wine cups from around the same period, but even as a novice I realise that my tiny cups are not in the same league as the Imperial pieces and so although I can handle wine cups of the period, this is still of no help. I guess that is why there will always be collectors dreaming of finding the impossible cup and hence the existence of fake ones.
