This sale is interesting because of their two tier estimate system used throughout the auction.  There are realistic estimates for those items that are deemed “important arts” in the sale.  Then there are the laughable estimates for all the non-important decorations such as ceramics from the Tang, Song, Ming, and Ching dynasties.  Loads of Kangxi items at 1980s prices.  I would love, love, love to buy within those estimate ranges!

With their horrendous shipping costs you might not make a bargain 😢

I see what you mean. I am tempted to leave a bid on a few things, but I guess that is the idea?  Do they want to be able to boast about sales exceeding estimates?

Peter released a video yesterday of this sale.  He was just as amazed as I was regarding the estimates and the quality of the the items in the sale.  Is anyone on the forum going to be in Paris at that time?

I feel as if Asia week happened late this year, but it has been a grand couple of months for material.

Just finished watching Peter’s video on the results of the Rousset sale.  Once again, I think it was another great example of an auction house that taken advantage of the psychology of an audience.  As he pointed out in the video, the extremely low estimates were definitely not a error or mistake on the part of the auction house.  One aspect of the success of the auction was based on playing on the emotions of the participants during bidding.

@william

Hi William and all -

I would totally concur! ...

If the auction houses are allowed, or persuade, potential consigners to keep estimates towards the lower end or, as is seen more and more recently 'no reserve', this automatically plays upon the minds of potential bidders, especially the psychology of those from the East, straight away implying and therefore 'implanting' the thought that 'I may/probably have a good chance of acquiring' a or some object within a particular sale ...

The auction houses known this and, as you rightly point out, play upon such; 'emotions are' ...

It also helps the buyers who do win because Im paying attention to stuff that I might otherwise have ignored.

More people remembering the object is probably a good thing in the long run unless youre immediately bringing it back to market, which can potentially cast doubt. Reselling has its own issues.

This is review of sale:

I bought one item that was on the lower end of the spectrum at this auction. I can tell you if the estimates hadnt been low for the more expensive stuff, I probably would not have gotten it.

But because it is pretty and has the provenance to back it up, Im still happy that I did.
