I notice there are several pieces in here where they state that a piece has a particular reign mark, but they neglect to date them, so they are leaving it open for interpretation. Isn't that the type of practice that Peter and others have cited as being not exactly ethical or am I missing something?

I would be very cautious buying from Bonham's. I'm just now going through the inventory for August. No dates, most pieces are looking new although the price estimates are outrageous. Buyer beware. They are leaving A LOT for interpretation which usually means deceptive. If it's new, just list it as such instead of no dating.

You can always ask directly through email for more information to get it on the record, but they might continue to hedge.

@ming1449 I was pretty surprised also. I stand by my "buyer beware" though.

My experience with Bonhams is with their Japanese items in London and Knightsbridge. San Francisco for Chinese items. While I always found them honest, the photos in their catalogues during the late 90s and 2000s almost always showed more vivid color than the actual item . I want to emphasize I was never mislead on age or provenance or condition. They always answer questions. I am not familiar with the Australian facility, but when in doubt ask questions

I've heard a lot of people hint at bad experiences from Bonham's, but I haven't heard a lot of elaboration.

The feeling is that they accept items on consignment that are low value enough to not be very profitable once the comissions are deducted.

The descriptions are very vague and only one image.

However Yvette Klein is pretty good and knowledgeable. I haven't purchased anything from them as the prices were always too high for me.

They have a few later jades from the 19th and 20th century that look OK. The republican porcelain plaques look to be attributes. But I only had a quick look at them.

If you need help Yvette is very helpful.

Further images are available here. But you must have the Dropbox app for outside of China.

I can't speak on the Australia location, but I faced similar issues with no additional images, condition reports at Bonhams LA. I will say however, as soon as I reach out I get what I need. It is strange on the no dating though - LA Bonhams always has the dating. If it isn't there, they won't say anything else I would think when you reach out other than not sure on the dating. That is the part I find strange. I think the lack of images may just be a passive way of posting the auctions.
