I thought this was interesting, it’s not something I’m thinking of buying. But it is a style and scene that Peter discusses in some length in one of his videos. There were 3 in the video, all of varying quality. This one looks a bit dubious to my eye. What do you think?

It was in the new video about famille rose. Absolutely worth watching. After seeing the video I would also agree with vase looks dubious.

Dear Nic,
the auction is not claiming any date for this vase. I think that it should be Republic or even a bit earlier.
What is wrong is how they call it.
In fact, it is not the “100 deers motif”. It is actually a rare motif, which meaning is not clear. The motif is “18 deers, one monkey and one spider net”.
There is an hidden meaning behind the monkey and wasp, but I have never found the meaning of monkey and spider net.
In my opinion it is a rare motif, because up to now I have only seen it three times, this one being the fourth.
Two of the four pieces are in my collection, a Guangxu brush pot and a snuff bottle.

That sounds interesting, Giovanni. Are you able to show us photos? I will understand if you prefer not to.
Just looked again at the vase: is there a reason the monkey and spider's web are only on one side? Also, on the other side, what is the deer at the back holding in its mouth? It looks a bit like it is swinging a basket.

I’m really surprised! I thought the deer and the tree are not too bad, but that some of the other details, like the rocks, were quite jarring, quite ugly. I noticed they hadn’t stipulated a period, but the price is ‘healthy’!

I think this is quite an interesting example of how it isn’t always about quality, or that rarity sometimes trumps quality?

Dear Julia,
that deer is holding a lingzhi fungus in his mouth, which is often seen in Chinese iconography.
The monkey and the spider are only on one side for the same reason because the deers are 18. The motif has always 18 deers, one monkey and one spider net.
Here is the brush pot. In the last picture you can see that here too there are the lingzhis.

the pictures that you posted are not detailed, they are quite blurred. It is not possible to compare qualities based on tose pictures. So I did look at Peter's video, which starts with a "100 deer" vase of the Qianlong period. I thoguth that it was among the ones that you have shown.
