Yesterday I was asked my opinion on this cong vase being offered by juice1499 aka chamberlain antiques. It's currently on eBay at about $3000 usd. Apparently it sold beforehand for about 10k but the buyer did not pay.
It's simply listed as a hand painted cong vase 20th century.
The styling is based on two famous republican period porcelain masters Wang Yeting and He Xuren.
In my opinion it's not by said artists. It's a later 20th century example. The sticker is very odd. It simply states a, sixteen letter letter. Which is very odd.
Although nicely painted the top and bottom decorative parts are poorly painted.
Mark
Mark, I agree. The border looks rather awful like someone had overpainted a previous pattern. And the bottom looks modern.
Birgit
I like these critical topics. I know nothing of this area, but I look forward to seeing what others say.

He Xuren was a important member of the eight friends of zushan. 1882-1941.
His works mainly consisted of winter snow themes. He is heavily copied.
Here is a genuine example sold at sotheby's in 2019. I really wanted this one. 😢
Mark
There is quite a difference in the quality of the original and the side of the vase.
I don't know much about republic pieces but I would not want to spend any money to look at that vase - especially given the messy top.
However, I really liked the one you posted earlier, Mark, the one with the children.
I actually really liked this Cong vase until Mark posted that beautiful plaque by He Xuren. They are worlds apart in terms of quality, and I can see why you wanted it. You'll find one, Mark! 😊
Looks like I have some diving to do on republic pieces.
Hi John,
That particular plaque sold for only $3500 usd.
It was imo very cheap. It was owned by a ebayer from Canada Joanne's house of treasures. She or he put it up a few times but the buyers never paid.
In the right setting and imo it was worth all of 15k.
Mark
That is very surprising. Before knowing that I thought it was worth multiple tens of thousands, but I probably would've been less inclined to bid coming from Joanie's. I wouldn't be surprised to see it resurface in the future at one of the big three.
Mark I agree with Birgit the boarder looks like the black outline failed during firing if you look at it closely you can see where it has blurred and pealed off the blue over glaze was added to cover up the flaws. I’m also concerned that the painting is to busy the negative space is gone the flow is missing. So I’m wondering did someone use a older rejection and paint a seen than refire it. One thing I would be sure of no master would paint on a flawed vase. But maybe a student or a forger. The original blue over glaze on the boarder is consistent with Republic pieces but the blue cover up looks more later period I think it’s a PROC vase.
Hi John,
It was sold by Sotheby's in 2019. Before that numerous times by JHT. Ranging from 100k to 25k.
Not sure why it only sold for $3500 in New York sale. Perhaps because it was offered so many times on eBay etc.
Mark
I am surprised that Chamberlain cannot tell that the Cong vase is an obvious modern product.
Now I would like to talk a little bit more about the plaque. The reason why it was sold at an extremely low price is because most people knew that it was just a high-end modern copy. The shading on the mountains, rocks, and the trees are executed very carefully;however, it was over-done. Therefore, you can see the meticulous craftsmanship very clearly, you also know that the art maker is trying really hard, but you just can’t feel much artistic values out there. Please note that, to authenticate any works from the circle of Zhu-Shan, one must know the subtle yet significant difference between the craftsmanship and the artistic talent. For example, Chinese painting is focused on changes in lines and brush strokes. If you spot two or more similar lines or brush strokes that are near each other, you have to be precautionary. There are many clues in that painting, which I don’t want to exhaust. I believe that, if you follow my advice, you can have fun exploring the painting and getting your own findings. Best
@ubecha Chamberlain offered it as 20th century so they knew or suspected it was not old. It was only the greed of the bidders that made it a masterful Republic vase.
Birgit
I checked the listing of said vase at eBay. Its up at 3000 again it seems.
@shinigami There is an old Chinese saying: From Nanking to Peking, buyers can never outsmart sellers. 从南京到北京 买的不如卖的精。Although there are exceptions from time to time, we as collectors have to be alert all the time and continue honing our skills and training our eyes. Best
I thought this vase was beautiful, but I remember the price flying past me pretty quickly.
