Hi,
I would like to hear some opinions about this plate. Could it be Qianlong period? The sticker makes it look authentic, but when I was searching for it, I see you can buy these for 3 euro, so it could also be added later. https://oldthing.de/Reklamemarke-Muenchen-Kunstsalon-J-Littauer-0031275108 it is 17 cm.
Hi Millefleur,
Littauer traded with books and paintings. The label you found was probably sold to China... Keep away from the plate, it’s brand new in my opinion.
Birgit
Thank you for your comments!
I want to own a piece with a dragon some day. I really like them. The piece is already sold. I thought the auction was still on, but it turns out they still have advertising for it online, but it ended yesterday. The result was €3000,- for this piece. It was on a normal Dutch auction, not a fake auction house as discussed some time ago. So I wonder why you think it's clearly fake, somehow the buyers did think different. The description did not state anything about age or period by the way, so it's the buyers interpretation I guess.
It seems fools are easily parted from their money. Unfortunately I never seem to meet any so have to work for a living.
Michael
@ Millefleur - could you eventually post a link for the auction? Or would you prefer to keep such things for yourself?
Of course, what do you think of the rest of the auction?
To me it seems original and modern objects, but they are not trying to trick anyone as far as I can see. They never state a period around a modern piece. But for me, I would like to see auctions not add those kind of things at all. It makes me even more unsure about authenticity of pieces.
Here are the asian objects: https://www.twentsveilinghuis.nl/nl/objekte/au-52/ac-33/oktoberveiling_2020/aziatica?Lstatus=0¤tpos=1
Here is the dragon dish I was talking about:
for me it's just the overall appearance of the piece. There is no age sign at all. The glaze is so shiny like it came out of the kiln just yesterday. Even at Christie's or Sotheby's, comparable pieces have some irregularities.
So I just can't think that this is an 18th century piece.
Chris
Many of the items seem authentic and as you say they didn’t give an age for the plate, which means they probably thought it was modern. Looking for a dragon you might want to go for lot 7024 which remained unsold and could be bought for 300 plus fees. In my eyes it looks authentic but I don’t really know much about 17th century so you should get more opinions about it if you’re interested in it.
Birgit
Birgit, doesn't lot 7024 look more like a later Guangxu dragon, with the criss-cross scales? It very much resembles the dragon on a piece I have that I bought from Mike Vermeer some years ago. I may be very wrong, though; I am far from being an expert.
Carol
I agree Carol, if I were buying an 18th c piece with a dragon, I would want to see proper scales. I tried to cut and paste an example last night (from Alan Truong's site) but couldn't work out how to do it on this tablet!
I still think this piece looks modern, but I suspect the reason the price went high is because bidders thought it was Guangxu.
Here is the Alan Truong example :

I did a search with google to see if I could find some similar plates. There is a pair sold at Sotheby's, Australia, said to have four character hall-marks and described as 19th ct. https://www.antiquesreporter.com.au/index.cfm/lot/1004836-a-pair-of-blue-and-white-dragon-dishes-qing-dynasty-19th-century/ And then there is one sold at Poly with a four-character mark which might also be a hall-mark (lot 256) but described a Qianlong period. https://www.sohu.com/a/131156476_644460 Personally I think your plate is either 19/20th ct. or Qianlong mark and period but I could well be wrong.
One more sold at Galerie Arcimboldo described as Qianlong period. https://www.artplus.cz/cs/aukcni-zpravodajstvi/1/rocenka-13-asiatika
