I know Rhinos are an endangered species now, But my collection are old ones and I love them
15"tall and 7 pounds , these are large ones and I have not seen any other this size even at Sotherby`s, Christie's, Bonhams, or Pinterest
richard severson
These do not appear to be made from Rhino horns but are of some other type of material. Nor do they appear to be old. The surfaces and patinas aren't consistent with the material which composes real horns, which basically dark Carotine.

The pictures do not do the justice but these are rhino horns and very old with lots of patina on them, so much patino that it is hard to see the grain, No wood is this heavy and no wood has the grain of rhino horns, I have many of them and I am sure if you saw them in person you would agree
richard severson
Is it possible to see a few photos of the bases and a close-up of the material's grain? - All the best
Yes I will post tomorrow, The bases are so dark, the Patina is cracking its so thick and the horn is so dark, I wish they were lighter, Sotherby`s says the honey lighter color ones are the most highly collected, but rhino horns come in many colors, orangeish, redish, brownish as well, My camera is cheap and does not do a good job, a cheap phone hehe
I sanded one bottom with 60 grit sandpaper, so hard to sand and smells like horses huffs
richard severson
Hi - here are a few other pictures, one is a new one with no patina on it
I believe the kwanyin is hundreds of years old if not more
richard severson
When was the last picture taken? I'm sorry but the pieces you have do not appear to be made of the said material or age. Always, of course an opinion but in this case I could almost guarantee it
Hi - last pictures were taken today, the good thing about a forum is all can learn something by the info, I have many rhino horns and I study them like a hawk and thousands of other pictures of Sotherby`s, Christies ect... Can I ask you Sanderse how many do you have?
Now here is a rhino horn that Alain Troung has listed and mine would be about this color but mine is so much older - take a look
richard severson
Hi Richard, many years ago I had a cane which was made from rhino horn. It is quite difficult to tell, my advice to you would be to either take them to a specialist or a reputable saleroom in your location. It is very hard to determine it looking at photos, you need to be able to handle it. I remember the cane I had, at first I thought it was made from cow’s or ram’s horn. I took it to a specialist in London and it turned out to be rhino horn. Good luck.
The most important thing about rhino horns is the grain, millions of little spear like lines, every square inch, and those lines have many hair like folicles, on rough rhino horns you can feel them with your hands but on smoother horns you need to look with a 10x loop to find a few as they come to the surface, all mine have this.
Bamboo wood carvings almost looks like rhino horns but bamboo is so light like balsa wood but the grain pretty close
richard severson
From photos it is hard to say yes or no, but rhino horn has so called “ fish egg” grain under light. When you sand it, you should smell sweet no “horse huff”. Fake rhino horn are generally made from baffolo horn, horse foot, and resin.

Btw, the sizes are too big. Rhino horn were so rare in ancient China, each piece of it was well carved by a skillful artist.
Cj
Rhinos were killed off by the time of the Han dynasty 200 ad, Qin and Han used the rhino skins for protection under their torso outfit they wore, so after that all rhino horns were imported or most
Hard to believe that these Big rhino horns are real but they are and who would know best than one who has many of them, even more than showing
richard severson
No only do the pieces not look like rhinoceros horn, but the style of the carvings is not what would be seen on something from the 16th through early 19th century. Very similar pieces like this can be found on liveauctioneers and ebay. Some are asiatic waterbuffalo horn with filled bases and some are injection molded plastics with fibers.
This is a perfect example. Looks like rhino horn, but it is not. Also, the shape is incorrect for an antique item.
It is what it is!
This might help here.
Here is a post and video we did on Rhino Horn carvings a few years ago.
