Hi,

For some time I have been wanting to get a linen press as we have so little cupboard space for bedding, however, they are always so expensive.

Then, a few weeks ago, I saw this marriage chest and realised it would do the job perfectly. I got it today and am so pleased with it.  I love it!  It isn't in the greatest condition but it was fairly cheap and will be perfect.  I know it isn't ancient and won't be to everyone's liking but I am just so pleased I had to show you photos.

You should have seen us trying to get it up the stairs. 🤣   Only the doors come off and the drawers out, the rest is one piece.  For a moment, I didn't think it was going to fit!  Still, it is upstairs now and I just need to decide where to put it!

Hi Julia -

I know little about such, although I've seen some authentic late Ming/early Qing furniture obtain eye-watering prices at auction ...

This piece looks really nice, very 'useful' and, most importantly, it's obvious you really like it😊  ...

Congratulations on acquiring ...

Hi Julie,

You have a beautiful example of a classical design.

I think, although I am not an expert on chinese woods etc that it may be jumu wood judging by the colour and grain of the wood. I also believe that it is probably from the 19th century.

Well worth investigating the wood species further imo. Rare woods as you know are very expensive atm and highly collectable! 👌

Hi,

Thank you, both.  It is beautiful and, although I haven't paid for it yet, I am hoping the final fee, including delivery will be under £200.  As I said, there is some damage to the back panel and the top and side have bowed slightly but it works for what I want.

It was described as 19th c so thanks for confirming that.  They said the wood might be elm, but I will look up jumu  - I have never even heard of that!

Thanks for your help. I absolutely love it!

Julia

Just found out it is a type of elm. 😊 Interesting.

Congratulations Julie. Apparently there are more than 20 different types of Northern Elm wood species in China.

Also know as YUMA. One of the most common used woods throughout China.

Still a nice item you have bought. Must have been a lot of fun dragging it upstairs. 🤣

In my opinion very cheap for the price including delivery despite the damage etc.

Hi Julia -

I understand that furniture made from Elm is rather out of favour with Chinese buyers at present, who prefer pieces made from rarer, and therefore much more expensive, wood types ...

I would echo Mark’s comments regarding the price paid - an absolutely bargain - despite the condition issues etc ...

Thank you, both.  I thought so too.  The cupboard itself was only £100, I am waiting to hear how much more will go on in charges (probably 25%) and delivery.  It was certainly a lot cheaper than any linen press I have had my eye on nd will work just as well.

What was really interesting for me was to see the way it is joined together.  The doors and central post were taken off for delivery and I was able to simply slot them back in without any tools or help.  I can't see any nails used at all, except in the handles.

Thanks again, for your interest and happy Christmas to both of you and everyone else on the forum!

@julia

Beautiful piece, Julia! I have one myself and it's definitely Elmwood. You can see the wood joinery so I'm guessing late 19th century.

That's lovely!  Are those small cupboards under the main one?  I love the way these are constructed. I feel very privileged to own mine.  I was wondering last night about the girl whose marriage cupboard it was; what did she stash away, how did she feel, how much choice in anything did she have?  I know so little about every day lives but having something so personal like this, is really making me want to find out more.

I often look at my collection and wonder the same as I know there's always a story behind it. Yes, below are cupboards. Like you, I lucked out too, the owner of this cabinet was moving from Singapore back to Australia and this wedding cabinet did not fit in well with their more modern design.
