Hi, I bought this last week for $1200 on eBay, it was a buy it now, and I would love people’s feedback on what you think is the quality of this vase, especially the fine detail and the figural painting, compared to other really good pieces of Kutani (or even great pieces, the like the one Peter made the video about). Thank you in advance for any and all feedback! Here’s the link:

Best Regards,

Charlotte Ritchie

Im no expert but I would rate this as very nice quality though not exceptional. But certainly a lot of work went into it so in that regard it's impressive.

I like it. Definitely worth owning.  If you had won this for a lower price at an auction, you might have ended up spending more all in to get it shipped with premiums.

That being said, I wouldnt spend too much more for something like this unless the market continues to improve.

@rahawkins thank you so much Russell. I regard you as one of the experts around here, so your feedback means a lot. I have been rather taken aback by the extra costs (premiums and shipping) of buying at online auctions besides eBay! I have learned my lesson the hard way about always finding out both costs before making a bid!

A very nice Kutani piece, with a great array of illustrations and patterns!

I think it was worth buying. A great piece to look at!

I have a feeling that the Japanese art market will be far more valued in the future, so hang on to it 😉

And also, what was its size?

And was the seller open to offers? Because to me, $1,200 feels like a lot for the current state of the Japanese market. Not unreasonable though.

I like Kutani and 40 cms is an impressive size.  Is that one of those two-legged dragons? It is hard to tell the quality as the photos seem a bit blurry when I enlarge them. Maybe post up some clear photos when you get it?

It would be nice to know what the mark says. Did you look on kutani.org?  As you spent so much on it, I would ask Peter (or the kutani guys) to assess and value it. Just so you have something better than an ebay invoice to rely on.

You may have paid top dollar for it, especially with the damage, but it is hard to tell without really good close-ups and besides if you really want something and can afford it, then why not?  I am sure you know this, and Clifford mentioned it, too, but if there is the chance to make an offer, always take it. Most sellers with buy-it-now and offers open, will have allowed for a reduction, but not everyone sells that way.

I think it is doubly interesting that it has an inner cover and the only repair is to the outer cover and lion finial, that inner cover bow would be hard for me not to display. I would be tempted to display the finial alongside. The mark is nice and should tell you what you need to know. I would definitely do as Julia suggests and show it to the Kutani experts and Peter. I hope it gives you many years of pleasant viewing.

@charlotte,

It's a very impressive ginger/other jar.

Kutani ware from the late Meiji period 1868-1912.  So circa 1900.

The design is well-done and it's a great size.

The only issue are the chips and the repair to the shishi. But it's professionally done. So that's a bonus.

  1. The price is imo getting close to full retail. So unless you really love it I wouldn't buy it for that price.

Of interest is the lid on image 7. Does this belong to this piece?

Overall it's a really nice example despite the damage. And if it's by a known master then that's a bonus.

Mark

The Royal Trust featured an example of Kutani in a video published a while back.  I like hearing people speak positively about the stuff.

@khoi thank you so much for your comment! I do have every intention of hanging onto this piece. It’s amazing how much more beautiful it is in reality vs the photos. The size is 12” without the top and a little over 14” with the top including the foo dog (lion?).

@rahawkins oh Russell, thank you SO much for this video. It is one I had not seen, and I’ve searched YouTube for Kutani, but the title did not include that word, so you have done me a great favor! 👍😁
