Found this jar about a month ago and it has grown on me. Most every bird is in a different position and realistically depicted in motion.  Has a firing flaw/crack at the rim, not too bad. Missing the lid also I presume. My favorite bird is gliding down, ready to land (the 1st closeup).  I am thinking mid 19th. I have a another jar with similar characteristics that was dated by a respected dealer as late 18th. But another, even more-highly-respected expert, has proposed 19th for that other jar. So that dating seems likely for this object also.  Todd

Ps. Mark taught me the difference between cranes and herons a while back. I think I have got it right....

Beautiful jar!

As a birder, they look like cranes to me.

Herons are slightly crested, while your birds seem to have rounded heads.

Depicted Japanese herons in flight always have straight necks. Cranes have curved or S shaped.

Yours has both.

This is my understanding.

@imperialfinegems Interesting.

Maybe cranes fly differently in different parts of the world, or they have it backwards.

Sand hill cranes flying…

Great blue heron flying…

Both are common species here in Florida.

Herons I see here and in the UK also fly with the curved neck.

I was going to say they were California Condors, just to keep the debate alive, but I will yield.

I am not an expert on birds.

Sorry I got it around the wrong way here. 🤗

Its been a long time since someone asked me this question.

From my understanding of Japanese artists depicting these birds on porcelain/other the following applies. Herons with curved necks. Cranes with a straight neck when in flight. The post depicts both imo.

Other artists in different parts of the world depict then differently as their are many types etc etc.

Sorry for the confusion.

Does this make sense?

Mark

@imperialfinegems I just read where cranes are symbolic of longevity, so that is a way to remember it because that word has the word long in it and cranes fly with long necks. Perfect!

Well, I couldn’t help myself… I’m quite nerdy about birds.

4 years as a senior aviculturist, and 3 years living in the rainforest - love birds!

If it makes everyone feel better, cranes and herons probably both taste the same - just like chicken with a fishy aftertaste.

Yes, I went there! Bak baaak!

No wonder I think of Florida when I see them on my vases.  I didn't put 2 and 2 together.

@sharonp All things great & small, really.

I’ve been an aquariumist since I was little, helped set up a few pet stores and ran a small business setting up & maintaining commercial aquariums fir a few years.

Additionally, I’ve worked with many species of reptiles and amphibians, but birds became my passion when I began working with Walt Disney in 1992.

I’ve worked with roughy 300 species, with specialization with psittacines (parrots), ramphastids (toucans & hornbills), and waterfowl /shoreline birds.

I never gave it up as a personal interest, but when my son was on his way into the world, economics got me to put my personal interests aside as a career, and I went into banking.

Crazy transition, but I’m good with business and it paid the bills. Now my son has his BS in Biology and works in ecological preservation.

Life is good and I’m blessed!
