Picked this up over the weekend. Not really sure what I have here. I have watched quite a few hours of videos on chinese porcelain and Mr.Combs is my favorite channel. However, I still remain mostly clueless when it comes to dating and valuing items. Any opinions on the vase would be appreciated. Thanks.

An interesting looking piece,
A Tulipiere, based on Dutch Delft Pottery but at first appearance appearing to be mid 19th c Chinese double happiness with Peony and Vine decoration.
A close up image of the decoration may assist in authenticating.
Shine,
Thanks so much, that is great information. Here are some more pics.

I am sorry to say that this looks like a decal or print type of decoration,I am unhappy with the even tone of the blue on the Peony and suspect this to be a modern piece.
Await further opinions as this is purely my observation.
Shine,
Ok, thanks. Good news or bad...I still appreciate your time. Cheers.

Hi watership, I agree with shine on the description, double happiness and floral scrolls and peony and also agree modern within the last 25 years maybe, could be later also, last 15, who knows. An unusual looking piece shine said based on delft tulipiere, maybe for holding many tulips? If you are trying to collect old or antique you missed on this one, sorry, keep trying. We have all been down the road you are beginning, good luck.

Flight and Shine,
Thanks for your input, and I would like you both to know you were 100% correct. I was not even aware there was such a thing as “printing”, even after watching 10’s of hours of videos on chinese ceramics. I examined this vase and found numerous examples of exact duplicate leaves in different areas...meaning these are not original brush strokes, but prints. I believe this new information will be greatly helpful to me in the future in regards to examining pieces for authenticity. Thanks again for your help.

Fight and Shine - Don`t be too quick to dismiss its age, Artisans painted by hand but had to draw in the design before painting, with cobalt you could not make mistakes or it would not be easy to clean it off the unglazed porcelain, to paint around a circle vase you could not just guess on it, the design would never had came out perfect, so they did use some kind of measuring device, pattern etc... many vases show this
I like the dirt inside the tubes and it may suggest it was buried for a long time - rich

hi richard and all, thank you for pointing that out. good day.

Richard,
Ok, thanks. I guess this vase would have to be looked at carefully, in person, by a professional, to get a definitive answer. I thought it was probably old...then I was sure it was modern...now I’m unsure again. Haha, I’m guessing that is not an unusual progression.

This kind of vase is called “Wu guan” vase, generally have five sprouts meaning “harvest of five grains”. The motif was popular in later QingDynasty.

The design on the vase looks like what you normally get on blue and white Strait Porcelain.
Remember also that with that many spouts, much harder to make, to align exactly, to make the holes and for it all to hold while the porcelain was still somewhat wet - Never be too quick on your investigations, and always be careful of others opinions no matter who they are - rich
P.S. I consider everything real until proven otherwise, that`s why I get so many deals because people don`t know what they got, others consider most things fake so they let it go cheap

Hi Watership,
this is a lovely piece that has obviously used for planting (the dirt in the openings). Looks like you could put hyacinth bulbs in the upper parts and water in the bottom, very much like today's hyacinth glasses. As to the age I think it is 20th century. The pattern is uniform and there are no brush strokes visible, seems to be printed. Maybe it helps to look at it with a strong loupe.
Best regards
Shinigami
Birgit
Thanks to all for the input. The “dirt” in the openings....I don’t know what to call it, but it is rough and very permanent. There is one clear imperfection on the front, I added pics of it.
