I found this bronze sculpture a few weeks ago. The longer I have it, the more I like it. It's very realistic. The hawk/eagle seems to be in motion. It is big, 15.5" tall, and weighs a ton. The piece separates into two parts, just above the feet. I am thinking Meiji to Taisho. The work is very good, although not at the absolute pinnacle.(I browsed through Christies and saw a couple of Japanese bronze hawks that made my jaw fall open). Not signed.

I love his claws! I had a look at some others - is yours a censer, too? I noticed the opening near the neck.

Yes! A censor I think. There even seems to be some ash in there. I like the claws too.

I didn't notice the hole when I first looked at it.
But I did notice how the body was attached to the claws. How interesting.
Are you absolutely sure there are no marks.... Anywhere?

I searched pretty diligently...because I was hoping to find one. If there is a mark, it is remarkably well hidden. 😄

Yes I think you are correct. The natural patina would have worn off significantly if it was outside say in a garden setting for many years.

I recall now that Peter has shown a few times Japanese bronzes that were in a garden setting for years..... From memory they had a similar patina to yours.
Not sure, though, how one could fix this.
The more I look, the more I am thinking it's Japanese and late Meji period.

Ah, ok. It does have a "weathered" look. It's alright, I still find it very enjoyable. And in another hundred years or so, it will have a nice patina 😄. Thanks for your help.
