Here's a little riddle for you, but maybe it's too easy. What do you think about my plate? Where does it come from and how old is it? There's a clue hidden in the decoration. What is the clue?

Shinigami, let me be the first to have a crack at. Japanese, looks to be a spring scene with cherry blossoms as far as age I have no idea but judging from the dress, Edo period but that’s a guess.
Looks very Japanese, but also very similar to delft fayence.

Hummmm Xin, delft you think, would never have thought that. Not an expert on delft but it just doesn’t look it to me. Delft in my mind has a very deliberate look to the painting. But that’s just my thoughts on what delft looks like. Ooooo, I like a good mystery, or riddle.
What fun! I can see the frits look like tin-glazed wares but I think we need to find the clue! Is it those rather fat flying penguins or whatever they are? Or the bamboo?
My first thought was that the picture was like some version of Jack and the Beanstalk - is there an Asian equivalent?

Julia, jack and the bean stock was my very first impression as well. If that is the clue, it could be English porcelain maybe 1800 or so. Jack and the bean stock was is an English fable after all. Once again wild speculation on my part.

Intriguing. To me it looks like a 19th century European copy of 18th century Chinese export styles in blue and white. Samson by any chance?

Reminds me a bit of Meissen's Blue Onion Style?
Is it based on a folk tale? I was trying to work out what the clue is and I can see a dead bamboo pole with a living plant entwined around it and a lady with a lantern. Is it a "pleasant" representation of The Peony Lantern? Or, indeed, the Chinese original?
A little far-fetched I know and what of the four fat birds - I think ducks not penguins?
The plant with all the leaves and the flower head that is at the base of the pole, isn't that the one that features heavily on Kraak porcelain? I am thinking this might be early 1700s Arita or Chinese?
I wonder what the base is like?
I shall need putting out of my misery, soon. 🙂

By the way, this “riddle” format seems like a great idea....at least for amateurs like me who really have no business giving opinions on pieces. Yet, in this format I can feel free to guess, and no offense is taken, no matter how misinformed my guess may be...because the owner already knows the true nature of the item. Please do this more! ? (It could even have a separate category in the forum)

I am an amateur, too, but feel I can give an opinion here and I hope my lack of knowledge will encourage you to do the same. I don't feel overly intimidated or fearful of getting it wrong on this site as I know someone will correct me and then I can learn some more.

Thanks to you all for your participation! Xin was right (is there anything you don't know, Xin?) this is a Delft plate. Watership was also right about Delft. Julia found the clue: the birds are Dutch seagulls, because that was what the painter was familiar with. Ron was also right because most Delft pieces have a distinctly European look. But there was a time when they copied from Asia, mainly in the 18th century.
This plate is from 1759-1765. Other than Chinese porcelain Delft can often be dated quite exactly because of the many factories' and painters' marks they used. The pine growing around the bamboo stick is a Chinese motif, while the lady has a more Japanese look.
Watership, like you I think it might be a nice idea to have a riddle now and then.

I really didn't think it was dutch, I toyed with English delft but just thought it looked too finely painted. Clearly my symbolic version of the rather macabre peony lantern was well-off track! My mind was really working over-time at breakfast!

35 years ago(roughly) , the Asia Society did a book on this very topic, the influence of the Delt industry by Chinese potters and how Delft pieces were also copied by the Chinese in porcelain. They would ship Delft to China and have them reproduce it, they further found the Delft makers would then copy the Chinese copies..and on and on. It was a fascinating book.
