From my jade collection. A finely carved jade plaque from Yuan/Ming dynasty.

Wow - beautiful ? such depth and movement - How large is it?
I have to agree with Lewis, wow. I see at least three levels of carving. Can hardly believe the patience of the Craftsman. One slip during its creation and there would be nothing and to survive 600 plus years.
Thanks. It is about 3.35 x 2.28 inches.

Where to start when dating jade like this I do not know , It's a minefield of a market , how can you learn when so many fakes around and so little reference to genuine pieces? Stunning piece by the way.
Hi Carlyoung,
Yes, you're right. It's a minefield. So don't buy anything if you are not sure about it. I studied this a couple of years, it is not easy. I use photo databanks of Sotheby's and Christie's to train my eyes. You must learn about the history, carving technics and so on. Museums are also very helpful. A right teacher is very worthwhile.

I have a small piece of jade , Nephrite , I believe it is a Belt hook in the Han? dynasty style , I studied good genuine pieces on the internet and that lack of tool marks were apparent on Genuine older pieces , highly polished and like many high quality treasures they seem to look newer than the pieces that are trying to look old.
My piece looks to be a lot later if not modern. I love Jade and it all very interesting but as I said . Minefield.

Exquisite piece! For all lovers of jade I have uploaded an article by Prof. Mitchel CHEN

Hi Xin this article if for reference only for archaic jades etc. It is almost impossible to determine if a jade artifact is from the said period based on one photo. Take your item for example. Based on just one picture it is difficult to date without further pictures etc.
Do you know or had dealings with the author?
From a personal point of view I collect jade and other primarily from the qing period and have been doing so for the last 30 years plus.

Dear Mark,
Thank you first for response. I know this is a reference book for archaic jades and some Qing pieces. I study and collect this kind of objects for a couple of years. Well, you have more than 30 years experiences and so on. But it doesn't mean you know everything about it. Me neither 😉 right? I own some archaic jades and Ming/Qing jades too. During my connection I met famous collectors, experts of auction houses like Sothbey's and Christie's and museums. They helped me to examine my very small collection. I know what I'm talking. I also had and have fakes. Many pieces (almost all) in the book are too obvious. Titles like Prof. don't help. If you don't believe me try to contact people from museums or renown auction houses. They can tell you the truth.
All the best

By your own admission you have only collected for a couple of years. You my friend have a lot to learn.
With respect to the major auction houses, ask peter's experience with them .
I find your reply offence!
This is one reason I rarely get join forums .

In your reply do not know Mr Chen. Is this correct?
Your item is well carved, but I doubt it is from the period you stated, based on only one pic.
Just how many pieced do you own?
Hello,
I am not an expert here, actually in terms of Chinese jade I am a complete ignorant - I have ZERO knowledge in this particular field. I am not a professor as well but I have MA in philosophy and I spent some years at my alma mater working closely with scholars of all degrees and holding variety of chairs at different places. That gave me a skill of finding a proper source of knowledge and I can tell without any doubts that this "book" attached above is a home-made production without even a trace of academical backgrounds. Even in terms of editing it is just bad and appalling. Therefore the value of the content itself must be put in doubts as well.
Conclusion - it must be some kind of beater for doggy items. I am sure the real source and what's behind this will be revealed soon.
I think Xin did a good job warning all of us here.
Regards,
Adrian
