Hi Todd,
the card is as large as a sheet of writing paper and was made by someone who works at the seller. It's with a dedication for me and dated with the purchase date. He probably painted it before and added the text when the vase was bought. In my opinion one of the most reliable German sellers, they have their items described by extern experts and they enclose an expertise and personal note with every purchase. Maybe not cheap but they usually give a discount and they have a lot of nice 19/20th things.
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
Ahh, I see. I think that seller really has their act together. What a great thing to do. 🙂 In another 100 years, that drawing will be part of the vase’s history and a great piece of provenance. They are certainly doing their part.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Hi Birgit -
Not really my area but concur Mark and Greeno’s comments, certainly the better of the two pieces ...
A wonderful touch to include a painted card of the composition, dedicated to you, and including the purchase date ...
Just wonder if this company also included translations of the calligraphy inscriptions and, if so, did such include a date?! ...
I hope George@gfhandel may see this thread and offer his thoughts on such if not provide ...
Stuart
Congratulations Birgit on acquiring this beautiful Republic Period vase. It appears the leftmost line of script on the body starts with a cyclical date of either 1911 or 1921 (The first character is clear but the second character is hastily written) so this vase falls within that ten year time frame.
George
Yes the first character is clear but the second character is difficult to read. Regardless, 1911 to 1921 is close to the date Of manufacture.
George
Hi Birgit,
Had a look at the website. They have some really great republic period porcelain on offer.
The jades on the other hand I would not touch!
Mark
This is a beautiful vase currently on eBay. It's jingdezhen and about 1985. Hand painted and currently a @$108usd.
A most attractive contemporary art form.
Mark
Said vase sold for $1125. These high quality retro pieces are now very sought after.
Mark
@shinigami Both vases are wonderful historical documents of a "moment" in time. They're both inscribed by Yu Yongxiang. The second vase is dated 1919, so it's likely that your guess of 1921 for the first vase is correct (the next xin year would be 1931, and it's likely that fashionable Chinese women would have largely adopted qipao by then).
Regards,
John Lee
Hi John Lee,
Is this artist known?
I ask because in the west we have limited exposure to republic period artists. There is so few information available. Not so in China though!

Yu Yongxiang was a known artist of Republic period.

Thank you so much, @jjytlee and @xin_fawis! This is really astonishing. I wasn't sure at first if my vase doesn't just use the name of a known artist, but after comparing the form of the body and style of inscription it seems to be at least made in the same manufacture. The vase from the Chinese website isn't expensive with $112, so I guess the value isn't high. Also it's larger (57 cm/22 1/4") than mine (41 cm/16") I might be tempted to buy the other one from my Ebay seller too if it wasn't for the hairline...
Below is a direct comparison of pictures, the ones with the blue background being from the Chinese website (after some color enhancement).
On the web I found a picture of yet another vase attributed to the artist:
Birgit
@shinigami Just found a book on this type of porcelain, Shishang Yangcai Ci or "Fashion Yangcai Enamel Porcelain". It shows a vase much like yours on the cover.
I'm not sure how one would get this book overseas - perhaps order through a Chinese bookstore?
Hi John, thank you for your help. The book is a great resource that's unfortunately not available (and not readable) to me. But I had the page from your link translated by Google and it's full of interesting information. The painter Pan Zhaotang is mentioned there, I own a vase made by him.
Your observations are right: the vase I bought seems a bit more modern than the 1919 one.
I have found still another vase from Yu Yongxiang done in traditional style that sold for only $150, maybe because it was lamped. The value of these vases is not too high, perhaps that will change one day. At least there's already a book dealing with that style.

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
