This one i purchased only yesterday , blue and white porcelain plate with Leopard 3rd level military meaning decoration and a Xianfeng mark , 24 cm's in diameter , I paid £150 for it so i would be grateful for some feedback . The glaze , paste and cobalt look OK from my amateur eyes , But can it be mark and period?
Carl
Very nice plate with unusual decoration. In my opinion it could well be m&p, but let's wait for the experts' opinion.
Birgit
Thanks for taking a look Birgit , Not much info out there i can find on Xianfeng porcelain .Apparently it was a troubled time and some kilns were destroyed during wars.
Carl
Yes I miss information about Xianfeng porcelain too. All you read about it is that not much was made and most of it found on the market is fake. I have a small bowl that has been declared m&p by several experts, so you can compare the foot and glaze with your plate.
Birgit
Carl, I really love the plate! It looks to be very nicely done.
Thank you Julia, Yes i agree it looks nicely decorated .
Birgit , Thanks for the images of your nice bowl , the white paste with neat thin footrim and also the creamy matt looking soft glaze looks very similar to my eyes.
Carl
Very interesting piece , but perhaps a little too convenient - rare xianfeng mark , rare leopard decoration. As far as I know , the designation of animals on military rank badges has no connection with animals on porcelain (same for the birds from civil rank badges) .
Maybe it's an effect of the photos but the glaze and blue tones seem quite dull and unvaried. And the central panel does not look expertly painted (the leopard, rocks, trees etc)
tam
Hi Carl -
A very intriguing piece - with rare Xianfeng mark. Production at the Imperial kilns ceased in 1855 when Jingdezhen was taken by the Taiping rebels, who totally destroyed and burned the Imperial factories to the ground.
Attached images for comparison:-
A XF m/p blue white vase, H. 28.5 cm, from the Gugong Museum, Beijing, and also a pair of enamelled bows, with iron-red XF marks and of the period, Lot 196, sold Sotheby’s HK, 28/29th April 1992.
The bowls have similar, but not identical, decoration of Buddhist emblems/flowers and ribbons seen on your dish.
I would agree with Tams thoughts regarding the blue on your dish, the tones show very little variations and mon of the ‘simulated’ heaping-piling effect as seen on the Gugong vase, and the glaze also seems very ‘white’ - this may, as Tam indicates, be ‘image effects’?
The central composition does appear to be very stiff and placed however ....!!?
Stuart
Thanks Tam and Stuart
I think the tone quality of the blue is due to the poor photographs , I have seen this many times before , As for the decoration i will have to wait until it arrives for a closer examination.
The seller sold it to me as a genuine Tongxhi mark and period piece so i have a fully built in refund already. lol , I will post better images when it arrives and may even need to have it looked at as i need to be sure .
Carl
Here is a proposed Xianfeng mark and period dish , It is on the Carter's antique price guide website and shows the same kind of tone of blue as my piece.

Hi Carl -
Interesting site for comparisons ...
Looking forward to seeing some better images when you've received ...
Stuart
I agree there is a stiffness and to the reverse, but I find (possibly wrongly) the style looks like it is copying an earlier period and to my way of thinking, copies - even ones copying in a sense of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery rather than fakes - often appear stiff because the artist is not being true to their own sense of artistry ie it is slightly unnatural.
I still agree with Birgit, it is a nice, unusual plate. I'm not saying it is m & p, the thing that stood out to me was the central circle (around the leopard), which I don't think is anything like confident and smooth enough, it seems to stutter (looks to have a kind of hollow-line effect, too?) but it looks nicely potted and glazed.
Please may I ask, if it isn't m & p when do you all think it was made? Still Xianfeng or could it be Tongzhi/Guangxu? Or later?
Getting an ID from Peter might be reasonable in this case.
Birgit
Thanks guys
Yes Birgit I think you might be correct , I will wait for the piece to arrive then take better photographs first.
Carl
