The new year is upon us. Have a great collecting year to all on the Forum.

If you could find one special item to add to your collection (at a bargain price) what would it be?

For me it would be an authentic Ming bronze, or perhaps a Tang horse (dream on) 😁

George

Dear George, it is very easy to have Tang horses at low prices. Just look at Catawiki, you can choose the one you prefer among many. And all them with TL test certificate from a respectable Lab. 😋 😋 😋 🤬Ā

Talking seriously now, among my list of dreams that I have never been able to find are: a massive b&w Yuan jar, a superb Song Ding incised dish, a nice plain blue Song Jun dish, a well carved Song Yaozhou bowl, a celadon blue Song dish, a Kangxi cat lamp, etc etc.

Regards,

Giovanni

A Hongxian and a Xuantong item to fill the gaps in my Qing collection. Not necessarily M&P, an accordingly dated item will do.Ā

@johnshoe

Itā€˜s possible, even on Ebay, if you know what you’re looking for. I recently found a lovely 1920s stem cup that was listed in the Japanese category for little money. Good luck!

Personally at the moment I am in the same camp as Birgit. Would love to own or find an authentic Hongxian piece. Although not sure any really exist since the self-proclaimed emporer only sat on the throne for less than 70 days. Far too short to start any type of work. Contention is that most if not all are from circa 1920-35. Some people think perhaps some work was ordered and executed. I really atm don't know the answer. Did see a plaque, very well made from a known dealer with said mark.Ā

Would also love own something personal from the last emporer PU YI. Many years ago (1985) I owned an imperial translucent dragon jade saddle ring that was an attribute to the late emporer. I regretted the sale from day one. I know who bought it. He still has it and won't part with it. BTW I did miss buying a child's robe said to belong to the young PU Yi with good provenance at a realistic price.Ā

Back to reality I would love to get my hands on a genuine Wang Qi or Wang Dafan piece at a rock bottom price to go with my Wang Yeting and Xu Zhongnan plaques I already have. Unlikely, I know but not impossible. The two I bought are highly probable by said artists that were bought very cheaply. 😊

A Northern Song Ru or Southern Song Ge glazed vase would also be rather nice!!😉 😆 🤣 ....

For 2020, I would love to buy huanghuali/zitan furniture, or maybe good quality decorative qing/republican porcelain or a nice Buddhist ming bronze. I'll have a sale coming soon on ebay with a few very nice quality lots.

My hopes are simple, I just want all this fine information offered by all the smart folks to come together in my head so I am not wrong so often. And maybe a large Ming vase for cheap.

Yes, please to the last two!Ā  That would be wildest dreams!Ā  At least many Tianqi wares are affordable and if I can stop spending elsewhere, I will easily get my wish! Hope everyone else does, too!

These all sound great! Good luck everyone.

I would love to find an 18th century pagoda pattern blue & white export platter. I bid on one on Ebay back in Nov but was outbid. I did score a plate with the same pattern so I have some consolation.

I would like to find a nice M&P piece. A beautifully painted republic piece and a Ming Ā bronze, a censer perhaps, and all at a reasonable price! I’m still on the hunt for a kraak dish too, having lost out on one I loved a year ago.

when I look back over the last year, I’m very happy with what I bought, but they’re not things I had foreseen I’d buy. I find that I have to depend on you guys and Peter’s videos to make good choices so, unfortunately, I often have to pass on things because I don’t know if they’re authentic or not. Conversely, at least I know that what I’ve bought is genuine and that I haven’t paid too much.Ā

Last Sunday, I was in a flea market, and a guy had some bronzes. They were an average of Ā£200 each, which would’ve been a bargain even if they were 19th century, but I couldn’t be sure. They allegedly came out of a house clearance in Scotland. It was so frustrating not knowing enough to be sure. I tell myself that in all likelihood they were not authentic so that I can sleep at night! In such a situation, there isn’t time to ask for advice, you just have to go for it... or not.

I feel quite confident identifying some wares, unfortunately they’re never the ones I come across when I’m out hunting!

Here’s to 2020, more study and even greater knowledge!Ā

NicĀ
