Ever since I bought this c.1880 vase I wonder about the decoration. It looks as if the green border was missing at the top. However the top is smooth and rounded and glazed. As I never had a cut down vase before I don't know if the edge is unglazed after cutting. Has this vase been cut down? Would it still be in proportion if it was half an inch higher? There are parts of the decoration at the top rim that look cut off but maybe that's just the pattern. The size of the vase is 21c, about 8 1/2 inch. The yellowish pictures are from my phone, the correct colors are on the pictures with the black background.

I think it's original.
The cut off portions I believe are part of the design. Note the line near the top.
Also if it was cut down I don't think it would have been rounded and glazed. But like you I also don't have any examples of said versions.

Thank you, I’m glad to hear that as I really like the vase. Don’t know why I didn’t see that strange rim design before buying. Sometimes one just sees certain appealing features and overlooks others, however obvious they are.

I may not be the correct person to disagree with the smart folks but I think it has had a bit of a trimming. Looking at the enamelling I see no lifting of the brush to stop at a specific spot all the enamelling looks to have been cut off in a perfect circle. I don’t think it has had a lot taken off though

I have just enlarged the photos as much as I can. I had wondered if the artist had misjudged the size of the pattern and maybe that border had stamped outlines that didn't quite fit, because it does seem odd that one can see partial flowers etc. I can't see it is due to the enamels around the top all wearing away for some reason because it looks more as though there isn't quite room for them.
The vase does seem in proportion, however I have just noticed that the edge of the rim is slightly leaning inwards as though it has been sheared off. Maybe the lip flared out a just enough to give room for the decoration and someone took that edge off leaving the actual height intact.
I suppose a restorer would treat unglazed edges to make them look glazed? I don't know for sure but Ron's comments did make me think that my first thought on the missing decoration doesn't really work.

I am pretty sure that it has been trimmed. Are you sure that the rounded top is glazed?
Please check the points that I have highlighted. There is, in my opinion, a sudden change in the curve between the decorated area and the top rim, pointed out by the red arrow. The decoration pointed out by the blue arrow too is not normal. Have you inspected that point with a magnifying lens?
May be it has been overpainted by a restorer, as suggested by Julia.
But it is a nice uncommon vase, of the type that Tommy called “Mauve mandarin”. What a coincidence, just this morning I was thinking about this particular type of ware, so distinct from the other wares of the 19th century, nevertheless we know nothing about them.

Dear Giovanni, Ron and Julia, it looks like you're right. I looked at the vase with a x40 loupe which I should have done before. As Ron said there are brush strokes cut in the middle. Also the rim isn't glazed as I thought but polished very fine so it's shiny and smooth to the touch. This has been the work of a restorer but I doubt if it would be made today in this way. The missing top border is only about 1/2 inch wide and the vase seems to have turned outward at this point. What a pity. So I'll eventually going to sell it as soon as I find an adequate replacement.
