Hello member.
It been a while, since I posted here but been following your question and answers. This I post is about the American eagle on porcelain someone,
forgot to tell the Met.Museum that they were fake. They have several pieces
with this eagle on them form early 19th century. John https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/201259?searchField=All&sortBy=Relevance&ft=Chinese++porcelain+for+the+American+market&offset=560&rpp=80&pos=637
Always exceptions, no absolutes, the tureen appears to be green Fitzhugh pattern Chinese export. It is all a great puzzle, thanks for the post. Helena Woolworth McCann worth a Google also, she was a granddaughter of F.W. Woolworth, so a Woolworth heiress. Sharon
Thanks Sharon
there more than one stile of painting. To me if you don’t research your piece,
you may be missing out. John
Pretty tureen. I hope to find one like it on my next garage sale shopping adventure!
Hello,Ang.p
when pieces came in to America they were already painted, John
@john-steward So they could order them up from Canton or someplace and they would decorate the blank portion with an armorial, monogram or whatever you wanted? I wonder who was the agent in London or wherever who arranged the order and shipment to the United States? I know how anxious everyone gets waiting on parcels, imagine what it was like to wait a couple of years for your order.
@sharonp Someone told me this funny story once about someone who travelled to China about a hundred years ago and bought some big stone statue and told the shipper to send it the most economical way possible to get it over to the states. Two years went by before it showed up one day in a massive crate that had import stickers from all over the world stuck to it. it apparently had quite a journey. The person had nearly forgotten all about it by the time it arrived.
@john-steward what I meant is.... there are 2 people in China. they are not finding the exact same person to paint the family initials as the rest of the piece. It's a big production. Not a 1 person show. huge groups of people work there.
Your write, it is a large operation. I posted a site some time ago that explain
all this from bad painting to upside down marks to imperial pieces sold. It had
a lot information in it but no one read it, everything in it was based on documents
and researching shipping companies records. John
@john-steward I found your post from February 2020, before I was a member and I see that Peter replied that the article was available in the reference case under Marchant Chinese Export 2015. Thank you, I am going to read it now. Sharon
P.S. The first armorial plate shown mentions below the illustration that it was designed by Plonk and ordered through Dutch relatives in 1740, so the Netherlands were the agents of the VOC who would send the order to China and see to shipment. Just search Marchant into the search on the reference case. You may have been referring to a different article regarding shipping companies I have yet to find?
P.P.S. You also have a post from March 25, 2020 that mentions a book held by Warick/Warwick that there was a problem getting it open. I just tried it again and apparently you have to join up to see it. I think I was a member by March 25 but if it asked me to join up, I would have skipped it, also it was not the first armorial plate shown in Marchant that mentions having Dutch relatives order up the armorial dishes in 1740 but a later one. The Marchant is very interesting. Thank you. Sharon

@john-steward That was an enjoyable read. I see what you mean about William Hickey's eighteenth century account of a porcelain decorating hall with upwards of a 100 people from very old men to children of six or seven. Records from the English East India Company and the Dutch East India Company were interesting. Thank you. Sharon
