Hi everyone 👋
Since my wife was on vacation last week, I had the time to meet with somebody who offered me some pieces of his collection. He has been a member of the John Sparks Network in the 90's, looking for objects in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. He has quite a nice collection and I was allowed to pick some pieces I could buy.
The Pewter Ewer I posted in the 'Help-Section' because of it's mark I can't translate.
But I also wanted to share these two:
A Ding Yao Russet Splash Meiping, Northern Song Dynasty
And second this Gilt-Bronze Gu Vase, early Ming Dynasty, with a very interesting Mark...

What an interesting base; what is it meant to represent?
I believe it to be a Dragon amongst Clouds. Probably a piece owned by a merchant. The three claws might point there, since four claws were reserved for Princes and their female counterparts and five only for the Emperor...

Do you know if the meiping is "true" ding kiln ding ware rather than 'ding-type'?
@avatar IMO this is a genuine Ding Vase. Not a later produced Ding-Type. But it is my first one... so being wrong is still in the mix 😂

Did you buy this vase? Black Ding ware is very rare and sought after by collectors of Song ceramics.
@avatar Yes, I bought the Russet Splash Vase and the Gu Vase. And also a marked Pewter Ewer (Thread in the Help-Section) and a bowl, But I am still researching on that one and will post it later probably 😉

@avatar It has not been with John Sparks. It never reached him. The Seller kept many objects for himself for his own collection. After talking with him and seeing pictures of him and Sparks, I am pretty confident in the authenticity but as I and you agreed, Ding Vases are rare and our expertise limited. I have reached out to some dealers, expecting to hear what they think...

Detuned (I feel a bit silly calling you that) I can see the dragon now, thank you! I know nothing about either of these pieces but is the flat top of your russett-splashed piece sloping slightly upwards or is that a trick of the light?
I wouldn't know if it is authentic, but I would like to have one. I find the marks on the foot rim on yours look as though someone had a sponge and dabbed them on. Is that because it is slightly out of focus in the picture? Or maybe that is normal for these pieces?
