I don't recall Peter mentioning this particular iron red dragon vase in his review of the Sotheby's sale.... looks like it snuck through the cracks. Listed as Yongzheng/Qianlong period, but not mark and period, it measures just over 13"... fairly normal vase size.
Estimated at $12,000-15,000, it brought 28 times the low estimate.... $327,600!!!!
Proof positive that the artistry is so much more important than the just having a reign mark. Food for thought.
@greenp107
Hi Tim and all
Imperial quality and superbly painted, possibly commissioned as a gift for one of the princes …
The price obtained reflects this …
Stuart
@ming1449 I guess this proves that the unpredictability in the economy has not discouraged buyers from spending.
@green107
Hi Tim
For extremely rare and important pieces, especial if deemed to by of Imperial quality and/or superbly painted examples of such, there will always be those who have the means to/are willing to pay a premium to obtain these objects - no matter what the current/prevailing economic circumstances …
Stuart
I couldn’t find any ‘provenance’ in their listing,just references to authentic other pieces…..
@shine I don't have the catalog, but it was sold with Sotheby's in London, 13th December 1977, lot 523. Perhaps the provenance was just kept quiet for one reason or another.

Lot 523 in 1977 is stated to have had a 6 figure reign mark and this one is said to be similar looking.
Very rare for no provenance.They usually say kept in a shoebox in a loft etc. when desperate.
@shine Only one of the pieces I've ever sold at Sotheby's or Christie's did I have them list the provenance - it can be a liability given that I often acquire the pieces at estate sales from very wealthy families. The sale prices and appraisals are handled by the estate seller (3rd party), so the purchases I make are perfectly legal.
However, there's nothing stopping a billion dollar net worth family from dragging you into court arguing that the item was wrongfully sold when they see their family name associated with an item that sells for $100,000's that they sold for $1.000.
@greeno107 I've been thinking about this recently because I have a piece with interesting provenance about to go to auction. But the provenance wasn't openly part of the deal when I bought it - I just figured it out myself. So, I don't feel it would be right for me to use the name without permission. Plus in my situation the provenance might come across sounding like bs even though it isn't, so I've decided to just let the art speak for itself.
@greeno107 I agree. Most minor auction houses won’t provide details of ownership.
A piece is right or wrong.Personally I have a niggling doubt on this piece which others may be able to correct me on.
I have never come across conjoined Ruyi clouds except in Later Qing pieces.Also,although there appears to be wear to the surface of the vase,the 300 year old Iron red is just about perfect.
Vic
Hi Vic, Tim and all -
Attached image of an identically decorated meiping, Yongzheng mark/period, plate 426 from ‘A Dealers Hand’, Giuseppe Eskenazi, published 2012 …
This shows the same ‘conjoined ryui-head’ cloud motif seen on the Sotheby’s example. This motif, although rare, is known on Imperial Kangxi pieces …
Stuart
@lotusblack it's a little republic vase. It will be in the upcoming Freemans sale.
