@imperialfinegems Mark I noticed our elephants have the same symbols on the head straps. A star and a circle. I wonder what that represents.
Interesting observation Brian. I haven't noticed that and i don't know what it means or represents etc.
Mine are still in a box!
If you Google 'qianlong elephant bronze censer'. You will find similar. Both old and new.
Mark
Mark brought up an interesting subject. Can the cut of stone decide a time period so I started to investigate this and my conclusion is during the 18th century the Chinese were involved in the gem trade active mining production and cutting. They were actually cutting faucets on popular snuff bottles. Here is a Qainlong period elephant that shows faucets where being used on incenses burners.
@lotusblack Sorry fir the slow reply… I’m on the road. Best you compare to sold pieces on Liveauctioneers…. I’m not really up to date. Off the cuff and without knowing the size, I think it has a decorative value of about $600
Hi Brian,
Just jumping in here but it looks like a copy of this one available on Bonhams from their June 26th 2018 Sale
Looks almost identical but finer casting, same as the Sotheby's version shown earlier but Bonhams gives better "real world" photos (no fancy studio lights and editing effects) & lots of close ups. The Bonhams bronze also has coral & turquoise cabochons instead of rubies but it does have a few blue stones which may be sapphires? Bonhams says glass. I wouldn't rule the presents of the rubies as the piece not being period either as they kind of remind me of the famous Qianlong gem-set clocks which had lots of inset faceted rubies/glass imitations. The Bonhams bronze sold for US$ 26,250 and that was mark and period - so I am not sure what a copy would bring. I feel like the Bonhams bronze has a nicer aged patina, yours has a more newer shinier patina that's been aged (as I find a lot of copies of Indian bronzes are). I am no bronze expert, but one thing I know to look out for is the details on bronze pieces so I would air to the safe side of 20th century but I would send it in for an assessment as everyone's suggested. Let us know what you find out!
D.
Oh, I'd like to add this one as well, I think these bronzes are all copies of this one in cloisonne from Bonhams Nov. 29th 2016 Sale - which is absolutely 'magnificent' as @Greeno107 stated. The immense amount of detailing and quality this one displays speaks Imperial made to me, far beyond the others I have been able to find, especially with regards to the lid & elephant detailing on the top.
D.
@fuantiques thank you for your opinions personally I’m just going to auction it off as a decorative piece the market usually determines the value. I think it’s a nice burner myself 20th century copies seem to be very amateurish but who knows but if it’s has flaws a major wouldn’t except it anyhow.
So I guess I have to have it inspected because I listed it today on EBay and I received multiple offers from China Europe and the US. I started the listing at $400 and was getting offers 4 times that amount. So I pulled the listing before someone bided on the item. It’s worth something I need to find out what I have.
@lotusblack That's encouraging! I hope it turns out to be the real deal.
@johnshoe I listed it as later copy and was getting offers and emails left and right when this happens it’s a red flag. When I checked their profiles these were serious buyers/dealers. I don’t know if it’s the real deal but I don’t know what any period is worth maybe it cost a lot to make a bronze these days. One of my friends had a point. He said it takes a lot of extra work to install faucets the smaller the harder if it was a fake why put the extra work in the faucets. Geez I don’t know.
Interesting with the potential buyers etc.
Perhaps ask Peter and or the major auction houses for their opinion.
The issue of faceted stones versus cabochon is irrelevant. These are not done by hand. Rubies are generally faceted but not always. Star rubies for instance are always cabachon. High quality jadeite for instance is never faceted. Its either cabachon or drilled balls/beads.
Turquoise is normally cabachon as are most other semi-precious stones. Especially if small.
Diamonds are always faceted.
Please do keep us informed. Its been most interesting. I still think it is modern. But good quality.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Mark so Im still getting emails with offers. Lol So it makes me wonder Is modern of good quality perhaps just as good as old with poor quality. If Im listing something as later copy maybe they don’t care. Maybe I have to rethink how I approach a buy. It’s clear with it been listed a copy they are still willing to pay a premium. I did also find a early 20th century censer like mine with no faucets it sold for $3000
@lotusblack One hint, if you do send an email to the majors is to turn off the auto correct function first, so that facet does not become faucet and provenance does not become providence. Loathe the auto correct, causes more problems than helps, but does give me satisfaction that we are not obselete in comparison to artificial intelligence (yet).
Just got back from traveling, is that bottom mark yours? says: "宣德年制- Xuande Nian zhi"---characters are not modern form and well written. Tag me if you need translation and I am willing to help.
Yin
@yinchris thanks here is a better closeup of the mark on the bronze.
I’ve also got some more feedback the repairs made in the kiln are of high gold content which is unusual in itself
Yin since I don’t read script or seal is there any way to tell modern script from old style.
