Hi,
Just a general question. Does anyone else get the feeling that the desirability of these pieces has risen recently? I was watching an auction where there must have been about 100 or more pieces, divided into lots, good estimates but they all went way over.
Sometimes, there were some particularly nice pieces with above average decoration, sometimes a couple of qianlong pieces were slipped in unmentioned, I can understand those selling strongly - those were the lots I wanted, too. However it seemed to me that on the whole the prices were higher than one would expect.
I wondered if anyone else had noticed this market had strengthened over the last year? Maybe because it is a more affordable entry point into Chinese antiques in a time of economic downturn?
Julia
Hi Julia, as I don’t watch auctions, I don’t know about the price development. Could it be that Chinese buyers are becoming interested in export porcelain?
Birgit
I don't know. This auction was online, but based in a large town rather than a big city auction house. One of the bidders was definitely in the room. Others like me, were bidding online but I have no idea where they were located.
hi Julia, can you share what's like the typical price range of a good piece? 😀
I don't know about Rose Mandarin, but Rose Medallion seems to be more appreciated recently, at least the earlier, good stuff.
Rose Mandarin isn't as common and since it kind of began in the 18th c. I can see its appeal for 18th c. collectors.
AngP I am not very sure. Sorry, but it really depends on the piece and I am obviously not up with these values otherwise I would have been more prepared for what was achieved. I just looked to see if I could access the results to show you some, but the auction catalogue has disappeared and there are no results pages. Annoying. I should have posted during the event. Just as an illustration, there was a cup with 2 saucer type dishes, estimated at 20 to 30 euros. I hadn't handled it, but it was described as 19th c, good condition. I felt it may have been a bit earlier, it wasn't typical Rose mandarin but in that stylistic direction. I think it sold for 800 euros.
Some pieces of Rose Mandarin had unusual central scenes that were very nicely done ie not the typical courtyard. There were also some that had particularly good borders. Some displayed good indications of age on the people (gilt on the hair, good perspective) and the painting was careful rather than careless. Other pieces were simply more interesting items, so not just plates but a varied amount of teapot styles, reticulated bowls, lidded boxes, small jars. It was an impressive collection and the lots were generous sizes with tempting estimates.
Still, even considering all that, they went well above what I expected. As I mentioned there were some pieces that definitely weren't 19th c which would have upped the interest/value. I also wondered, given what was said on here the other day about buying after losing a bidding war, whether that may have accounted for the higher results on the "lesser" items.
Possibly I am used to my local auctions in Surrey where you can pick up Rose Mandarin quite reasonably and things may simply be different here in France. I don't tend to buy that category on the whole, but as I thought I had noticed prices creeping upwards a bit this past year, I felt it may be worth getting a large lot to sell on. Obviously if enough of us are thinking that, prices will rise. It was wondering about that, led me to start this thread.
I might be a little less generous than Steve, but yes, your 20 bucks are safe and as he says, there are worse examples. Things to look out for are the lack of gold in the hair, poor perspective on the bodies where the head is overly large, badly drawn tiled floors and a real sense of stereotypical decoration. I believe Birgit also mentioned the use of black outlines around the cartouche on later pieces.
I really wish I had saved the photos from that auction.
Interesting thread. I recall the Schiffer books mentioning black borders are also associated with the Boston market.
Also Julia, as a new collector in this area, rose mandarin/canton/medallion helped introduce me to collecting Chinese porcelain. I'm still on the lookout for a nice large punchbowl. I don't know if that speaks to the general interest it still generates among new collectors.

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
