I know of it, but I don’t know anything about it. As I mentioned to Sharon, I picked up one piece and noted some faint writing on the bottom. I recognized the word Maria. Is that typical? I think the smallest piece was under $100.
William,
Something like this? Definitely typical... Though a number of signitures were used.

Interesting link
None of those pieces in the Houston sale are Maria Martinez; she didn't do that deeply incised style. Some of those have some value, done by well-known pueblo potters, but they are heavily faked, and almost all you find are worth very little. The smaller one beside the other two is more similar to Maria's work, but doesn't show anything like the quality; you can tell that even in the small photo; it is probably modern Casas Grande, from Mexico.
I actually have a real Maria Martinez and Popovi Da plate, fairly small, that I found in a thrift store for $3. Not worth what it used to be, but still thousand or so, maybe. Has a fleabite.
Back in college, in the late 1970's I saw Maria making pots at a demonstration at Texas A&M University. She made them the old fashioned way, firing them in a pile of cow patties to get the good reduced black finish.
Charles
Charles,
You probably know far more than I.... I wasn't aware they were faking these for instance I met Santana Her son when I was a child, the pottery was exquisite, it stuck with me.... I hope I didn't get anyones hopes up... I suppose its faked, lesson learned.
Jeremy
@kirby13 I had never heard of her before so this is good info to learn. A local shop has had a piece like this recently that I thought was attractive but since I knew nothing about it I left it alone. Think I'll go take a closer look at it now.
I read about Richard Gordon Matzene on Wikipedia the other day, an interesting fellow who collected her early pots.
P.S. There is also a YouTube video of part of the Matzene collection housed at the Ponca City, Oklahoma Library, apparently he hid out in China during the Boxer Rebellion, does not show the black pots but some of the Asia things. I may have seen the black pots at O U or OSU.
Hi Jeremy,
They aren't really fakes--just copying her style. They aren't signed Maria; they have the real maker's name on them. Maria's pots are so perfectly glazed and shaped, and the decoration is so perfect and sharp, there is no mistaking them once you see one.
@kirby13 I swung by the local shop where I had seen a black pottery vase and it is still there so I got some pictures. It is not signed from what I can tell. The bottom is not flat so it has to be cradled in something to sit. It is fairly lightweight. Seems like it has some age. Would love to hear your thoughts on it. John
John,
I love that... Glad you got it. It is an Olla or at least the form, it reminds me of this one... though I like yours more

I made the mistake, once in my life mind you, of passing on one at an estate because I didn't know any better... This was ten years ago, and I still remember my friend slapping me for not buying it. It was certainly perfect in every way....ooof.
Jeremy
@johnshoe I like it, but I would guess later than the early stuff by Maria Martinez and her peers. The large black pots I saw were from the twenties and thirties, that one is way more intricate.
P.S. According to Wikipedia she made pots until 1970, so I don't know and she probably inspired many others.
@jbeer2121 I didn't buy it yet. I was looking for feedback first. Not sure yet if I will get it or not.
Hi, John. That looks like a typical Casas Grandes Mata Ortiz bowl from Mexico. Pre-columbian Casas Grandes bowls are valuable, but are heavily faked--I can find several old-looking bowls in any antique store in Albuquerque. A few decades ago, the old potting techniques were rediscovered at Mata Ortiz, and several families of potters have sprung up. They do very fine work in more modern styles, like yours, and styles copying New Mexico pueblo styles (I have several in my house, but they are of little value, generally at most a few hundred dollars, and commonly much cheaper. But they are absolutely gorgeous, and I still buy then when I find a good one; I think they are very undervalued for their quality. Here is a link to one that is similar to yours.

Google "Casas Grandes black" and you will see many like yours.
They are usually signed, with a faint scratched signature on the bottom.
