I’m too far away… I suggest if you go, you get there when the address is released the day before - well worth camping out.

The porcelain table screen could be interesting.

In the office setting is what looks like a Jaeger le Courtre clock. If it is it's worth buying.

There’s a lot of good pieces, and possibly some Christie’s quality pieces.

Everyone will be running fir the table screen, but it appears unsigned. Large & beautiful, I’d say if I damaged, at least worth $5k.

The Tibetan thanka looks interesting- not my strong suit, but looks 18-19th c , and if so, $1500 and up.

The planter depicting scholars objects and calligraphy- $5k + if undamaged

B6C5793F 184F 48B3 8F48 2657FF8C9E84

Now look close…

DDEFBD0F FCC7 42B1 A0C0 DDBAE2169562

Late 19th c iron red decorated vases are an easy $1000, but the little green vase looks like Jiaqing or Daoguang work - if genuine and M&P, you could be talking tens of thousands of dollars, maybe more.

And here…

7F0EE7F6 DDB1 462D 88E2 79F5315E63F1

White 19th moulded trigram vase should be worth $1000 easy.

Langyao bottle vase could be worth $1000 if 19th c, but potentially $10k if earlier.

Pair of conical celadon bowls look early…. $500 at least, but strong potential to be Ming which could bring several thousand.

8A2553F3 AB70 4DBA B9A7 22DF3CEBC52B

Last, the small hu vase on the fireplace l mantle could be the most expensive piece in the house - an 18th c mark & period vase like this would certainly bring $100k or more.

On the shelf, the bottle vase, which might be European and not Chinese, is worth checking - could be 18th c.

Below that shelf, three yixing  teapots - get the correct maker and they can be worth a fortune… they usually sell cheap, too!

Oh lord!  Now you are leading me into temptation.  You circled more than a few items that caught my eye.  If that Hu has the right base with white paste stained dark & honest wear!

Tim, the cong vase is where I would head first, they always look so strangely contemporary, even the genuine old ones. Driving down to Houston and then through to Sugarland holds no appeal and I'm too old to be jostled by pot enthusiasts, I might end up on the floor as a tripping hazard. Looks like someone had a career in oil (all bidness), I hope someone does go and then tells the forum of their adventures, I missed hearing about your expeditions while you were on hiatus.

My guess is they are all reproductions. But Bill should go see and let us know.

I would guess the owner spent some time as a military aviator. If that included Vietnam, he would be in his late 70's or 80's, if still living. May well have picked up many of these things during overseas tours. I have known some who did. Perhaps he retired at a fairly young age and went into oil afterwards.

@johnshoe There is already a buzz about the sale among Chinese competitors on WeChat…

In fact, I was called to see if I was already there - LOL!

I would not gamble that these are all modern - the screen certainly is not, so quality begets quality as a general rule.

@cashflowz Yes, maybe a retired pilot with military background. I like the little tavern/work table in the entry and now I see there is also an Asian low chest. Looks a standard Houston suburban home from the eighties and nineties. One thing I will never understand is why decorators from that period would buy and place old Reader's Digest condensed books on the shelves, in the fifties and sixties someone trying to appear sophisticated would have hidden those away, "look at me, I only read full size books."

@greeno107 How can you authenticate anything with these pictures? I agree it's worth checking out in person to see, but how can you be positive the screen or anything else in there isn't a fake at that distance? Plus, so many possibly very good things but none going to auction? Seems a little fishy. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying I don't think you can be sure until you see them up close.

Whoever goes good luck on finding a sleeper, don't forget to check out the black Southwest pots to see if they are by Maria, I have only seen the genuine ones in glass display cases.

@sharonp Wish I could go to this sale but I, too, am too old to fight the traffic and the buyers rushing to snare bargains. I will just sit back and feel envious. I hope William or someone is able to go and report back. Looks like an experienced estate sale and auction house -- like johnshoe, I wonder why they aren't sending some items to auction if they are indeed as valuable as they look.

@johnshoe How can I be certain if the authenticity of some of the pieces in the photos? Experience, but there are pieces in this sale that I’m not 100% sure are genuine, but at least 5-6 pieces are.

The basis of your skepticism, that these items would be at auction if they were genuine, is unfounded.

This year alone I’ve bought 7 items, exactly this way, that are at Christie’s right now, going up for auction in September - hoping for combined sales of $200-300k.

In the past 6 years, I’ve had similar success, so it’s not pure luck.

The key factors are as follows:

1) The photos are good enough to see that the general appearance of the pieces look authentic - shape, size, color, design

2) The decor of the house looks appropriate - affluent, sophisticated, traditional

3) The geographic location is an area with high probability of good Asian antiques- yes, some areas of the country are better than others for finding Asian antiques.

4) Estate liquidators often require the owner to leave some (but not all) high end pieces to attract buyers to the sale.

5) Estate sellers are notoriously uninformed of the true market value of high end antiques, especially not Asian antiques.

I’ve made the analogy before - finding good Asian antiques is like bid watching: you need to understand the most probable environment in which to find them - then stake out these spots until something shows up.

THEN, you need to know how to ID them from afar as well as uo close.

It’s not a perfect system, but it’s working for me and quite a few of my competitors.

@greeno107 there are some pieces I like the look of as well but something about it looks too perfect. I'm probably just being paranoid but it reminds me of a sale I saw once that was a total set up just to sell fakes. I think they rented a vacant apartment just to pull it off. There are very committed scammers as you know. At any rate, hopefully someone will go and let us know what they find.
