Do visible mold line seams in porcelain mean that the piece is always new?
No, they don't. Many old pieces were made in separate halves and then joined together.
As is often the case, to be helpful for determining authenticity, you'd need to first determine if mold lines are expected on the form and age of whatever the piece in question is purporting to be.
I've been surprised to find mold lines on small pieces that wouldn't even seem to require this method of construction; for example, some very small early-Ming jarlets.
Thank you very much. I took a small balester shaped vase to be appraised at a local antiques club appraisal event, but the appraiser I drew was really just a local antique shop owner and his appraisals consisted of looking on his lap top to see if anything similar was for sale on ebay, he did not want to try to appraise the little flow blue vase because he said it has mold lines. I had purchased it at an antique shop in 1978 and I only wanted to know if it was Asian, European or Ohio/West Virginia, but since he knew it was not likely to be on ebay, he would not attempt. It does have mold lines on each side, as do a small set of boudoir lamps from Indonesia, which were not the small vases that I took to the lampu lady, which probably broke when being drilled and by that time I had waited a month for the lamps and she had put lovely pink shades on them, which pleased me but not my husband. When we married I wanted to take my bed from my room but he informed me that he was not going to sleep in a white and gold canopy bed. He had to make a concession to the little lamps because he needed a bedside lamp in Indonesia.

Asian antiques are in their own special niche, with each area of origin (China, Japan, Thailand etc.) having their own nuances and quirks. It's not suprising that the antique dealer you showed your vase to wasn't particularly helpful. Unfortunately that's all too common. It would be nice if appraisers were more honest with their own limitations, but it seems it's just easier to say "modern reproduction" than it is to say "I don't know." And by the law of avergaes, more often than not they're correct.
Have you posted your vase here? I'm sure some of the members could point you in the right direction.
No, I have not posted it or the little lamps, as I am giving my photographer (husband) a break from ceramics, although I have continued to place more as I find them in queue on the dining room table. The appraiser did say he did not think it was delft because he collected delft and that delft did not have mold seams on the sides. I will let you know when it gets posted, I hope by some miracle it is Asian, but it will probably be an early Ohio knock off of delft.

Mold lines and luting lines are sometimes visible on early porcelain.
Best to show the piece.I have plenty of Delft from 1650-1800.

@shine Dear Vic, I posted the little blue and white vase under title "Who Can It Be Now." It might be Japanese, American or other.
Well, I found an example very similar to my large blue pottery vase on page 55 of Etsy offerings (I could spend the rest of my life looking at the chinese ceramics available), in answer to my question, no it is not worth having the damage professionally restored because the example found is only 55.00, smaller but not by much and it is only from the nineteen-fifties.
