Hi everyone,
don’t ask how, but I managed to buy this by mistake! It’s honestly the most ridiculous story!
Anyway, I won’t bore you with the tale, but I would like to bother you for your opinion. Is it what it purports to be? If it is, is the price I paid OK?
It arrived today, it is VERY heavy and much bigger than I’d anticipated.
Nic

Many Ming items look shit. They are still Ming.
That is not to say this looks bad, it actually looks exquisite in many respects. I can say the seller you got this from is one of the best on ebay and if he describes it a Ming then it is Ming. Please ask Peter, about it. he will confirm it. Hopefully the experts will lend their opinion soon.
Thanks SD,
I would be surprised if it wasn’t genuine because, like you say, the seller has an excellent reputation. To be fair, it wouldn’t matter a whole lot if it wasn’t because I paid so little. It would also be my fault because it was my accident!
Maybe it was a happy accident after all?!
Nic
I am 100% sure it is genuine, however he has said Ming/Qing. So it is not certain what the exact age of the item is. I guess from that description it is very early 17th century (1600's) or older.
Let's see if anyone disagree's. Just the size and detail alone give some value regardless if it is made in 1960. If it is 400 years old then it was a very good sale.
The base of the Sculpture is unusual. It does appear to be very old. Easily Georgian Period old. What made you concerned about it Nic?
Here is a picture of the base
My guess is that your concern is that there is a possibility it is not Ming. Ming does have a magic that allows something to have prestige where it is not always strongly evident in the workmanship. As soon as you reach Qing you expect a better quality to be evident.
Like if a wood sculpture was from the Restoration era, the workmanship is not as important but as soon as you move into the Georgian era it has to be better quality and by Victorian it must able to stand out above other items.
If this is Ming it has a value all of it's own and if it is Qing then it is not so special and i think that is bothering you. That is my best guess or at least that is what would bother me.
Initially, my concern was solely based on the fact I bought it without due care.
Now that it has arrived, it looks great... maybe too great? But I don’t know what it should look/feel like.
Nic
Well you got free post 🙂
I got that 18th century Mug with absolutely no care or attention. God Bless the British they are so Honest.
I have no idea either Nic, but I am certain that should this turn out to be a recent fake, I am sure he will accept it back with no bother. He does have a good reputation.
The seller gives a huge timescale for it to have originated from, but at the price you paid, it is still ok if it is early 20thc. I think it is rather nice and if it is at least 100yrs old, then I would be very happy with it.
Just out of interest, is that a repaired crack that runs up and down the sides? It seems an odd place to crack but on one side there looks to be a suggestion that there was a staple. It is hard to tell from the pictures, I could be mistaken, I just wondered.
Hi SD,
I know! Free post! And it weighs a ton so postage can’t have been cheap!
Hi Julia,
The line running around it isn’t a crack, it looks more like a mould line. But I’m not 100% sure. It is heavy so whatever it’s made of must be a very dense material. At first I thought perhaps it was made of terracotta, but it’s heavier than a brick so again, I’m not sure.
I don’t think I’m very suspicious about it’s age, my concern was more to do with the haphazard way I bought it. Very unlike me, but maybe it was fate!?
Nic
I think you may have to tell us that story! ? ?
?
It’s a bit embarrassing as I don’t really know HOW it happened! It was on my watch list but I don’t know how it ended up there. I assumed at the time of bidding I’d seen it on Bidamount and that’s why I added it to my list. So when the price was low I put in a low bid and won it. But I don’t think it was on Bidamount! So it’s a mystery!
Stupidity or Divine influence? ? Don’t answer that!
Nic
? That is odd but sounds like it was meant to be. As I said, I like it, I like the gentle way she is touching the dragon.
