I was thinking about how I would love to be able to spend some time with some of the people on this forum, to have discussions, ask questions, share some of our collections with each other, and discuss nuances and aspects of this passion we all share. For myself and others, I know it would be very educational, and I think it would be a cool opportunity for the more experienced members to provide a valuable mentoring service to newer collectors. Meeting over a video chat would provide a suitable forum. While it would fall short in that only one person could actually touch the items, we could still closely examine and evaluate through the lens and share what we know about the items. My hope is that some of you would be interested in trying this out. If so, respond to this post and we'll see if we can set something up. Who knows, maybe this could become a thing with one to one and also group events happening online. I'd be happy to host a ZOOM gathering for whoever is interested. At any rate, let me know what you think of the idea and I look forward to seeing who's up for trying it out. Cheers! John
Hey John, I think this is a great idea! Count me in.
I personally wouldn't as I am not good with lots of people, but is a nice idea John, although I think there would be global time problems for a lot of us.
That‘s a Good idea. Have you talked with Peter about that ?
Chris
@chris71 No I haven't spoken with Peter about it directly, but it seems like the sort of thing he would appreciate. I'd love to know what he thinks of it and any ideas he might have. I also know that he says in his videos that he does keep an eye on what's happening here on the forum so perhaps he will see this post and chime in.
Hi John,
As Julia mentioned the time difference between us all would make things difficult to do in real time. Considering we all here live all over the globe I think we do pretty well with the tools provided by bid amount. There are other groups available on the net, facebook etc but I have found that Bid Amount and perhaps Gotheborg are the best. There are very few places left on the internet where people conduct themselves in the friendly, respectful and helpful way that we do here.
Michael
You may find there is a ceramic's circle in your area, and if so it would be a good thing to join. Local long time dealers in your area should know.
For example, I was one of the founding members of the ceramic circle in my area a good 20 plus years ago.
You are right, they are excellent ways to learn.
We'd meet at one members home once a month in general. Each time there would be a theme, and those who had pieces in their collections from that theme, would bring up to three pieces. We would sit around a table or several tables pushed together, and pass the pieces around as they were talked about - one at a time.
You end up with a diverse group, some dealers, some collectors. Sometimes we would invite local experts (from museums etc), to make presentations.
Everyone would also bring something light to eat or drink, cookies wine soft drinks etc and after the items had been passed around, we'd spend the next 30-60 min chatting
Some of these ceramic's circles get quite formal - getting registered as societies, and publishing etc, and others like ours, stay informal.
Handling items while their owners tell you all about them, is a great way to learn. It works for the dealers in that they get to cultivate customers (and learn), and it works for collectors in that they get to learn, and see things they may want to add to their collection.
We had some basic rules - like no business activities permitted etc.
If there isn't a ceramics circle in your area, then why not think about starting one - not everyone will be interested, but those that are, may like it alot.
@avionsunantiques That sounds exactly like the type of event I am envisioning, only we would do it online. Again, not being able to handle the pieces would be less than ideal, however I think it could still be very useful for sharing a bit more in depth than we can in still photos and written posts. I like apsects of the structure your group had, and again in in line with what I had already been considering. I will get some of my ideas down in writing and then see who wants to try it out. I will also look into local group opportunities, but these days the online option is more realistic for several obvious reasons.
@brettm It is the friendly and respectful way we communicate here that I think creates opportunities for further sharing which an online gathering could take advantage of. Of course, not everyone would find a particular time will work, but for those who express an interest we will try to come up with something that could work. Initially I am thinking Sunday as a day to try, and we can see what time of day might draw the most people.
@julia Out of curiosity how many people would be too many for your comfort? I am envisioning a fairly small group, maybe 6-12 range. And there would be some structure to help things along as well.
Mine email is [email protected] so anyone interested in this can reach out and we can arrange a meeting.
Maybe already three would be too many - including me. I am laughing as I write this. It sounds awful, but I simply cannot cope with (visual) social type things. Maybe I could be blacked out so I can see but not be seen? Like looking in through the window.
To be honest, I would not be able to join in anyway as I live across the ocean, too. Maybe they could be recorded and shared on here afterwards?
Thanks for asking, John. 😊
