This auction closed this morning with a large selection of Chinese export wares. Pictured below are similar lots of colorful 18th/19th century figures of Chinese Immortals.  The average sales price for all of these lots, but one, is $9000 which is reasonable in my opinion.  But…one of these lots sold for $441,000.  Can you guess which one (without peeking at Christie’s website)?  More importantly, why?

I'm going with 979 because the color is different, lighter than the others, and they look like they are a perfect high quality set.

I'm going with 972 for the lavender color and the silk ball design on the robe also the two toned face of fellow with the eyebrows and beard.

I would to say 915 because one has a different color hat that’s rounded and look like it could be a stopper for a suff bottle top. It looks like it painted purple looks like it glass but it’s hard to tell for sure. Purple was used for only royalty

my vote is 915, as the 9 chars are a good set of Shou Lao and the 8 immortals. The others don’t have a full set. (But one could have bought two other lots to make a full set and some. So this is only valid to a degree)

Fun but tricky! I was wondering if the set with 2 "pairs" may be correct but I don't think they are similar enough to count as a pair. So I am going for 972 because it looks like one is holding a jade ball. She may not be, I can't zoom in to check, but that is what it looks like and none of the others have anything similar.

It is a while since I played cards, but it just occurred to me that two pairs wouldn't beat a full house anyway. 😆

I know which one, because I spat out my coffee when I saw it, but I surely would love to know why, I have a few thoughts, but I don't want to give it away with them...

Jeremy, is the expensive one the set you would have bought for yourself? Or would you have chosen another? My favourite is 913 just because they all look happy. To be honest, I struggled to see much between them, certainly nothing that would account for such a huge increase in price. It is very intriguing!

Whoops, sorry,  I have just realised you can't really answer without possibly giving it away!
