Picked this up today. At 1st I thought there was just one horse on this dish. Then I realized there are two. The one on the left, at 1st glance, looks like a cloud. Early to mid 20th? Thanks, Todd

That's lovely! I missed the second horse, too.
I think it is ok for early 20th c. I am not 100% sure but it may equally, be a little earlier than you suggest, too.
The things that give me doubt are the very nice foot rim and the pattern on the back which looks so tidy and controlled compared to the front and therefore more like some mid-century items I have. I will have to look at the back of some of the plates I have upstairs.
I don't see many Japanese Arita plates with that much crazing - is it deliberate?
Hi Todd,
Very unusual design. Would also have missed the second horse. The central design has a certain feel/look to it that escapes me for the moment.
I would submit, in my opinion that based on the singular spur mark that your plate dates to the early 20th century rather than later.
Peter would like this, I think. He likes horses.
Mark
I do have some later items with single spur marks, but they also have Japanese Chenghua marks, so maybe their whole base may be intended as a throw back.
Peter would like it for sure. It is one of the nicest things you have found, Todd. The picture also reminds me of some style. Is it reminiscent of Tianqi / ko-sometsuke? Only it fills the space more - and ignoring the gold, obviously. Those red dots seem very familiar too only I can't remember what or where I have seen them.
Hi Todd -
Not really my area but a nice piece - I’ll defer to Julia’s and Marks regarding dating ...
Appears to be a continuation of one of the designs widely used on the so called ‘kosometsuke’ wares produced for the Japanese market - attached images and description of a large Tianqi period dish ...
Pieces depicting horses amongst landscapes are also known on such wares ...
Stuart
Hi Julia,
I don’t know if the crazing was intentional...if I had to guess I’d say it was, for what that’s worth.
One of the nicest things I have found? Wow, that’s great. I like it too. After looking at it for a while, my opinion is that the 2nd horse is purposefully disguised. The neck/head is really longer than it should be...making it look more like one of the clouds. And the coloring of course....Its hard for me to believe this was unintentional. I’m not sure if this is some type of style with a deeper meaning or if the artist was just a bit sly and playful. The 2nd horse mane is also drawn in such a way that it could be the sun’s rays peaking through the clouds....not 100% that was the intent, but it could easily be.
Hi Mark, Yes, Peter does especially like horses and also other animals on porcelain. I share the preference. Anything with animals on it always peaks my interest. Thanks for your insight.
Thanks For the link Stuart. I’m sure you are right in your assessment.

Stuart, I love that. I really would like to own something of that type. I think that is why I liked your find so much, Todd!
Pretty surprised to see almost the same plate on the bidamount ebay today page, today. But its listed as Chinese...is obviously Japanese. I am thinking its listed with too high of a starting bid? $199?

I would be tempted to enlighten the seller! Yes, I think that is too high as an opening bid.

Ok, I let him know. I wonder if Peter will put it in his video this week.

The pictures are gone from this old post, but I was looking through the Kyushu Ceramic Museum catalog and there it is. 1760-1790? I had no idea. But now that I am handling it again it certainly does have the hallmarks of an old plate. This catalog is nothing short of fantastic, highly recommended for the Japanese buyer….
